Job Summary
The Trauma Unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital has undergone number of changes over the last 18 months aiming to improve and drive innovation. The department sees on average 120-150 patients per month requiring full traumatic assessment of whom 20-25% are found to have serious injury patterns (with an Injury Severity Score greater than 15). We regularly see major head injury and serious chest injuries together with a large cohort of elderly major trauma. The department has received positive reviews from the North West London Trauma Network and has been a contributor to the network being graded as one of the best networks nationally. The department has a developing research profile with projects taking place both with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and prospective cohort studies in conjunction with Anaesthetic colleagues at Chelsea and Imperial Healthcare MTC at St Mary's.
The post holder will be an experienced nurse with clinical expertise in the management of trauma patients from admission via the Emergency Department through to follow up post discharge. The post holder will attend all trauma calls within the Emergency Department within working hours, liaise with in patient medical and surgical teams to ensure care is co-ordinated and facilitate best practice with adherence to NWL Trauma Network and national guidelines.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be an experienced nurse with clinical expertise in the management of trauma patients from admission via the Emergency Department through to follow up post discharge. The post holder will attend all trauma calls within the Emergency Department within working hours, liaise with in patient medical and surgical teams to ensure care is co-ordinated and facilitate best practice with adherence to NWL Trauma Network and national guidelines.
In conjunction with the Trauma Network Director, the post holder will review, update and maintain existing guidelines and pathways applicable to Trauma patients and will be a key driver in creating and embedding new pathways in line with best practice. The post holder will educate both the Emergency Department and relevant ward staff on the holistic management of Trauma patients. The post holder will take a key role in ensuring accurate and timely submission of Audit data and ensure the Trust is compliant with Trauma Network requirements.

- Clinical Practice
- To coordinate and facilitate effective pathways of care for trauma patients optimising their safety and well-being
- To review (and attend when possible) all trauma calls to ensure that standards are met, appropriate decisions are made for all trauma patients and that all specialities are involved in the care of the patient
- To ensure that robust pathways and lines of responsibilities are established for trauma calls so that service continues when not on duty
- To work with relevant specialities to co-ordinate the care of the trauma patients from admission to discharge or transfer of care, including liaison with services, and to make independent onward referral where required
- To work autonomously to examine and assess Trauma patients holistically and contribute to planning care
- To work with the therapy teams undertaking secondary and tertiary surveys/assessment of trauma patients
- To provide clinical leadership for the nursing team across the trauma pathways to ensure a high standard of patient care, providing support and supervision as required
- To provide specialised advice to the patient family and carers regarding the management of trauma-related conditions
- To work with the MDT and bed management team to ensure an effective management of the repatriated trauma patients
- To contribute to the local resolution, investigation and follow up action of any informal complaints within the Trust
- To provide expert clinical advice to Trust staff regarding the care of trauma patient and protocols

- To participate in the identification and development of clinical protocols and strategies to enhance both the continuity and standard of specialist care whilst ensuring equality of access to service
- To act as a role model providing clear and consistent leadership at all times
- To lead the establishment and development of a nursing co-ordination team for trauma patients which provides a 24/7 monitoring of patient pathways, response to trauma calls, co-ordination of all secondary transfers and tertiary referrals and support for relatives
- To challenge individuals and the teams practice/performance in a way that will improve quality of care
- To actively involve service users in providing feedback of their experiences of the current service and providing suggestions for improvements
- To support the trauma data collection by interpreting clinical information and assisting with the analysis and presentation of the TARN and other trauma data
- To ensure all TARN data is submitted fully and on time
- To attend and participate in all key meetings including: Trauma Committee and Trauma Clinical Governance
- To work proactively and collaboratively with the North West London Trauma Network, resolving issues as they arise, upholding adherence to standards and protocols
