Practice Development Nurse - ED - West Middlesex Site
The Professional Development Nurse for the Emergency department functions within a field of practice that focuses on the needs of the patient and encompasses interaction with others in delivering nursing, health and social care. Their key role is to support all ED staff ( Adults & Paediatrics) to provide a high quality clinical service to patients through ensuring they are equipped and supported with the skills to perform their role, in line with the best available evidence for practice.
The suitable candidate will be an experienced registered nurse with good clinical competence and excellent ability to teach and support learning.

Main duties of the job
To undertake and submit an annual training needs analysis for all nurses within the ED, in consultation with staff and the Clinical Nurse Manager, to meet Department and Divisional objectives.
To plan for and ensure that all new staff are appropriately inducted corporately, clinically and locally into the Department, and complete all areas of such induction.
To implement a planned system for all staff accessing mandatory training, and to follow up non completions.
To ensure that all staff receives timely mandatory updates as required.
To ensure that staff training records are updated and recorded within the ED, in line with Trust policy
To develop and deliver formal and informal education provision, actively participating in the provision of education for staff and to evaluate education programmes based on evidence based practice in relation to emergency care.
To work with the Clinical Nurse Manager identifying knowledge/ skills gaps of staff and developing appropriate training to support staff developing their clinical knowledge, skills and competence in order to meet both Personal Development Plan objectives and the identified needs of the department.

Clinical Practice
- To work in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and Trust Policies and Procedures.
- To ensure that own practice demonstrates current clinical knowledge and evidence based.
- To work clinically on a regular planned basis, supporting pre and post registered NA/ANA in developing their practice.
- To produce written accounts of each episode of clinical facilitation, documenting learning objectives achieved and areas for further development.
- To demonstrate comprehensive nursing knowledge in clinical settings and support the advancement of knowledge and skills using evidence-based practice to all nursing levels.
- To work effectively as part of the multi-professional, inter-disciplinary team, encouraging and supporting other health care professionals in the promotion and maintenance of an effective learning environment.

Education and Research
- To facilitate the learning and continuing development of all learners and registered NA/ANA within the Trust, ensuring that education is responsive to service developments.
- To develop and co-ordinate planned educational programmes adhering to the Standards for pre-registration nursing associate programmes
- To advise in relation to educational opportunities and assist NA/ANA in developing themselves in accordance with their personal development plan and/or appraisal objectives.
- To support NA/ANA in developing clinical competency using the Trust core and clinical competency document as a framework. To monitor use and completion of competencies to an agreed level, in accordance with ward requirement.
- To support the Ward Managers/ Department Leads, in production of objectives, development and evaluation of learning contracts for NA/ANA; including monitoring of action plans as required.
- To support appropriate practice assessor, practice supervisor and preceptors in their role, ensuring that learning opportunities are effectively utilised for all learners.
- To promote research awareness by, disseminating appropriate evidence-based and research findings relevant to the clinical practice area. To keep the Head of Nursing, Professional Practice and Standards, informed of any new nursing research proposals, and on the progress of research studies approved by the Trust R&D and Ethics Committees.
- To work closely with Approved Educational Institution (AEI) staff and the Head of Nursing, Professional Practice and Standards in contributing to the development and review of speciality-related nursing courses, and in the evaluation of relevant courses in order to help inform Education Commissioning.
- To work collaboratively with AEIs and other Trust colleagues on Education Quality Reviews in relation to the quality of the clinical learning environment.
- To support education and training of new learners / apprentices of all levels working and learning in practice across all fields of practice.
- To participate in inter-professional teaching and learning including undergraduate medical education.

- To work with senior nurses i.e. ward managers and matrons to ensure that NA/ANA Development processes are implemented within their clinical areas
- To work with the Ward Manager/Matron to ensure clinical practice within their division is compliant with national guidance and standards i.e. NICE guidance
- To be aware of themes and trends arising from clinical incidents and complaints, and ensure these form part of the on-going educational and development programmes for nurses on all levels within their Division
- To be aware of the quality and performance i.e. score cards within their Divisions and support senior nurses with the implementation of quality initiatives
Workforce
- To assist ward sisters to maintain records of training undertaken by each member of staff.
- To produce appropriate educational data or reports requested by management.
- To lead in the process of ensuring multi-disciplinary training to meet specific initiatives.
- To assist in the process of recruitment of nursing staff and in conjunction with colleagues, identify and implement educational strategies that support retention.
- To ensure all NA/ANA receive a comprehensive and individualised induction and orientation package on commencement of post.
- In conjunction with Senior Nursing colleagues identify and address the educational implications of audit findings and clinical incidents.
