Job summary

Specialist Paediatric Dietitian Ketogenic

Band 7

Part time 0.6 WTE FTC - 18 months

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Dietitian within the Neurology and Dietetic team at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals NHS trust, as a two year fixed-term contract. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work as part of an MDT team, work closely with the lead Consultant to develop the outpatient ketogenic service and work alongside a team of highly specialised dietitians providing a high quality clinical service to neurology outpatients across paediatrics 0-19 years.

We are looking for a dynamic individual with either previous neurology/ ketogenic diet experience or substantial general paediatric experience who wants to further develop their skills and become a specialist dietitian within the highly rewarding area of neurology, epilepsy and ketogenic diet.

Relevant clinical experience, the ability to work under pressure both independently and in a team are essential qualities.

Main duties of the job

To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of work, including the management of patients in your care.

To be able to carry and prioritise your own designated highly specialized clinical caseload, working as an autonomous practitioner without direct supervision.

To be responsible for the commencement, education and monitoring of outpatients on a ketogenic diet, tailoring the diet to the specific needs of the patient and family.

Monitor nutritional parameters such as nutritional requirements and micronutrient levels and make dietary adjustments where necessary.

Provide dietetic input to the Consultant-led review clinics.

To develop and monitor enteral feeds and diets to support patients on ketogenic diet based on interpretation of biochemical monitoring and growth.

To provide teaching to the MDT and external health professionals when required.

To maintain a database of patients on the ketogenic diet to monitor the service.

To take responsibility for certain patient conditions or clinical areas, as delegated by the Band 8 or consultant lead for the service, and to develop specialised assessment and treatment skills in these areas with support from the Band 8/ Consultant.

They will have significant clinical experience, ability in developing and delivering a highly specialised and comprehensive ketogenic outpatient service. They will take the lead for ketogenic diets and manage an outpatient caseload of children and young people on ketogenic diets working with the lead consultant to monitor nutritional parameters.

They will also provide sound clinical expertise to their team and more junior staff to coordinate and deliver high quality care. They will be a role model for expert clinical care, and lead on specific projects/ service developments and management functions as delegated by the Clinical Lead Dietitian, Lead Consultant or Therapy Manager. They will role model the identified Trust values at all times.
