Senior Clinical Physiologist - Respiratory Physiology
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and hardworking Clinical Physiologist to join our Respiratory Physiology team working for Chelsea and Westminster NHS foundation Trust. We have two respiratory labs, one lab is situated at West Middlesex University Hospital site and the other lab is located at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital site. This role will be based at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital site although flexibility to work across both sites is expected.
You will play an active role in helping to develop the Lung function and Sleep service. The post-holder will be proficient and experienced in performing, interpreting, and reporting on full lung function testing. In addition to performing specialised testing including Bronchial Challenge (Mannitol) and skin allergy testing.
We are looking for an experienced and fully autonomous clinical respiratory physiologist with a high level of demonstrable technical ability and clinical application. The post holder will play a key role in helping to further develop and expand the lung function and sleep service under the guidance of the Chief Physiologist and Service Manager. This will include being responsible for assisting in the day-to-day management of the respiratory function laboratory along with other members of the team; to work collaboratively and co-operatively on a day-to-day basis with others to ensure that service needs are met.
Main duties of the job
The post holder should be able to independently manage a diagnostic service for both inpatients and outpatients, prioritise the competing demands placed upon this service, and be able to work flexibly within the structure described above being able to adapt quickly to any changes in this structure.
The post-holder will be proficient and experienced in performing, interpreting, and reporting on full lung function testing. In addition to performing specialised testing including Bronchial Challenge (Mannitol) and skin allergy testing.
The post holder should also have experience in setting up sleep studies, CPAP setup and CPAP Review. This will include experience in manually scoring limited channel polysomnography.

Roles and responsibilities1. Testing Patient Lung FunctionTo greet patients, take basic height and weight measurements, explain the nature of the tests and reassure patients. To confirm patients suitability for the test by clarifying recent medical history and checking for contraindications to the tests requested.
Be able to perform, calculate, quality control, and have a sound understanding of the clinical relevance of the results of a range of tests and take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of all reports leaving the laboratory.
Tests to include:1.1. Spirometry (including Flow/Volume loops, and Pre/Post bronchodilator via MDI or nebuliser)1.2. Lung Volumes (by Helium Dilution)1.3. Thoracic Gas Volume (by Body Plethysmograph)1.4. Airway resistance, and associated measures (by Body Plethysmograph)1.5. Transfer Factor (for CO)1.6. Skin Tests (for respiratory allergens)1.7. Ear or finger Oximetry (%O2 saturation)1.8. Capillary Blood Gas Analysis1.9. Respiratory Muscle Function tests by postural spirometry using handheld spirometry devices, and maximal pressure devices both MIP/MEP and ideally nasal measurements if these are required.
2. Patient Testing Sleep Studies The post-holder should have experience in sleep studies sufficient to perform the tests and have an understanding of the results to assist in conjunction with the respiratory department with quality assurance and of the clinical relevance of the results of the following tests:2.1. Oximetry overnight including the analysis and basic reporting of these results.2.2. Measurement of end-tidal and transcutaneous CO2 when needed2.3. Use of Non-EEG Polysomnography (AKA 6 channel limited sleep study)2.4. Use of limited EEG polysomnography2.5. To set-up and analyse full polysomnography sleep studies (desirable)2.6. Diagnostic Continuous Positive Airways Pressure device trial as a treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea2.7. Use of and demonstration ofportable equipment for home based sleep studies.
3. Other Patient Services3.1. Peak Flow Meter and record charts3.2. Check patient's use of inhaler therapy3.3. Liaison with medical and nursing staff to provide necessary patient care in the hospital and community.

You should hold a BSc in Respiratory Clinical Physiology or an equivalent qualification. The possession of relevant professional qualifications (ARTP Part I /Part II) or equivalent is essential. You should be RCCP registered or at least eligible and working towards registration.
