Job summary

The C&W hospital has a strong Endoscopy service. The team is led by Endoscopy Lead Nurse and Consultant Clinical Lead who work alongside the clinical and management teams. Our Endoscopy is JAG accredited with up to date modern equipment, friendly staff and are recognized for providing both high level quality care to our patients, and exceptional training and learning opportunities for members of the team. There is strong multi-disciplinary working and close links with other providers. We provide a range of gastrointestinal procedures in 4 well equipped endoscopy rooms. We run 5 day service including out of hours support to the Gastroenterology team for gastrointestinal bleeds and in house weekend waiting lists initiatives.

There are training opportunities for the post holder to train to become a fully competent JAG accredited clinical endoscopist beginning with upper gastrointestinal procedures and the individual will be fully supported throughout their training. This is subject to meeting all the required probationary review standards.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the Lead Endoscopy and staff in the management of the service and supporting the provision of a high quality cost effective care. S/he will be expected to provide an effective leadership working closely with the nursing team as well as the Consultants and MDT colleagues whilst demonstrating the values. S/he will be responsible for safe staffing daily and in advance whilst complying with the Trust KPIs. S/he will be expected to support the teams in delivering safe, high quality and dignified care. They will play a key role within the multidisciplinary team in order to ensure a seamless, co-ordinated and timely approach to Endoscopy service. The post holder will ensure that all activities are carried out within Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust policies and guidelines and promote the objectives of the Trust's Nursing Vision and Strategy.

In specialist settings, they will have a significant level of specialist clinical knowledge and expertise in the clinical functions of care delivery. They will provide advice and guidance also, and generally be known as a senior staff nurse and able to assist in interventional procedures like ERCP, EUS, stent insertions, dilatations, EBUS etc.

  • Clinical / direct care practice
    • To manage and control resources required to provide a high quality endoscopy service.
    • To assist the endoscopists in performing interventional procedures such as ERCP, EUS, Bronchoscopy, Polypectomy, Stent insertions and dilations etc.
    • To be responsible for the booking of the interventional procedures such as ERCP, EUS, stenting, dilatation etc.
    • To support Endoscopy in maintaining the Joint advisory Groups (JAG) KPIs, guidelines and accreditation.
    • Participates in endoscopy oncall rota
    • To co-ordinate admissions, throughout and activity efficiency and effectively ensure the skill mix is appropriate to meet the service requirements and to provide a high standard of patient care at all times.
    • To ensure that standards and waiting times are met in order to provide a quality service to patients, relatives and carers and are in accordance with Trust targets.
    • To ensure that Endoscopy lists are fully utilised and patients are prioritised according to local and national guidelines.

    • Ensuring that Health and safety Act, COSHH, HTM 2030 regulations and BSG decontamination guidelines are adhered to. To complete risk assessments and ensure correct procedures and safe practices are in place.
    • To establish an effective communication network with the multidisciplinary team as well as with patients, relatives and other departments. To work in collaboration with the wards and departments especially the Endoscopy Decontamination Unit (EDU).
    • To contribute to the Clinical Governance Agenda, ensuring all practice is evidence based and all practice is monitored by audit.
    • To be responsible for maintaining and monitoring consumable items for the clinical areas, ensuring efficient and economical use of resources with allocated budget.
    • To prepare/monitor staff rosters ensuring that this resource is being used efficiently, within the unit budget. To meet the service needs by co-ordinating the staff establishment and implementing changes to the rota as required.
    • To regularly set the agenda based on information received via the nursing structure of departmental meetings to update staff on developments and information and discuss local and other relevant issues.
