The role of the Deputy Chief Nurse is to provide support to the CNO across the whole of the CNO portfolio, being an active member of the executive management team. The post holder will have significant knowledge and experience in implementing and supporting a nursing, midwifery and AHP strategy as well as in issues relating to quality, patient safety, safeguarding and clinical governance. The post holder will be required to work in partnership to manage and develop further Trustwide systems and processes to provide assurance of quality and safe service delivery and appropriate risk management, working alongside the site based and divisional teams.
The Deputy Chief Nurse plays a pivotal role in leading the Trust's patient safety and quality agenda in partnership with the Medical Cabinet. Together they will lead the development and implementation of quality initiatives to improve patient outcomes and patient satisfaction. In realising this ambition, the Deputy Chief Nurse will ensure that there are structures in place to support the engagement of clinical staff. They will develop a culture that encourages excellence in clinical practice, facilitates team working and multi professional care delivery.
Main duties of the job
The Deputy Chief Nurse is an integral and equal partner within Corporate Nursing Team providing specific advice to the CNO, Trust Board, directors of nursing and divisional management teams regarding issues that support quality and safety agenda.
The post holder will act to ensure high quality and high value patient care is delivered throughout the Trust.
To provide professional and visible leadership which inspires, motivates and empowers nurses, midwives and AHPs across the whole Trust in all care settings.
To provide expert advice, support, challenge, scrutiny and decision making as required or when necessary to nurses, ANPs, senior managers and staff across the Trust and to be an active participant within the management of the Trust.
To ensure systems are developed which can provide assurance to the CNO on all issues associated with quality and safety agenda.
To provide expert advice, represent the Trust and contribute expertise in regional and national working groups to inform and shape policy and service design.
To ensure the implementation and achievement of the full range of national and local policies and targets relating to nursing and midwifery practice.
Deputise for the CNO at internal and external meetings and participate in the Trust executive on-call rota.
To lead on the safeguarding agenda for both child protection and vulnerable adults, contributing and ensuring consistent representation of the Trust at local child and adult safeguarding boards.

This is a senior post within the Corporate Nursing Team and member of the executive team, the post holder will be required to liaise with and influence a range of stakeholders including external regulators. The post holder will be required to deputise for the Chief Nurse across patient safety, patient experience and quality accountabilities.
Key Responsibilities include :
- Lead on practice development that reflects the national and local quality/patient experience agenda.
- Lead on the development of the corporate quality strategy and support the implementation of a work programme which delivers the relevant outcomes.
- Support the delivery of the patient and staff inclusion agenda to support the implementation of the equality delivery system.
- Ensure sustainable and improved organisational wide systems and processes for quality assurance.
- Coordinate the delivery of the Trust framework for quality assurance.
- Ensure sustainable and robust management systems that are integrated across all parts and levels of the organisation.
