Job summary

56 Dean Street Europe's largest Sexual Health service seeing more than 100,000 attendances per year. We are an award winning Level 3 service based in the heart of Soho, London and target many of our services to the LGBT+ community.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) in Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH).

You will use your passion, empathy and specialist knowledge of Sexual and Reproductive Health to deliver advanced nursing skills to our patients and drive training and education to our team of over 60 Nurses.

Main duties of the job

The ANP will inform the strategic direction of the clinic as well as in the GUM Directorate regarding the continued development of nurse led sexual healthcare. They will coordinate effective communication across the multi professional team, between departments. The ANP will provide specialist education and development for nursing staff and colleagues through education programmes, individual development programmes and clinical supervision.

The ANP promotes excellence in nursing practice through the integration of expert clinical practice, education, consultancy, acting as a resource, developing practice and commitment to research and audit.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • The Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) in Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) will use their specialist knowledge, skills and experience in providing sexual healthcare to undifferentiated patients attending the GUM departments within the Specialist Care division. They will work as a self-directed independent practitioner managing patients with complex needs for regular follow-up care and treatment, providing care which focuses on enabling patients to optimise their health.
  • The ANP will inform the strategic direction of the service regarding the continued development of nurse led SRH care. They will coordinate effective communication across the multi professional team, between departments and the community. The ANP will provide specialist education and development for nursing staff and colleagues through education programmes, individual development programmes and clinical supervision.
  • The ANP will directly line manage the Nurse Practitioner team and support the nursing team and junior doctors to complete competency-based training programmes appropriate to their level. The ANP promotes excellence in nursing practice through the integration of expert clinical practice, education, consultancy, acting as a resource, developing practice and commitment to research and audit.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Use their advanced expertise and clinical skills to independently manage SRH patients including those with highly complex treatment and psycho-social needs.
  • Assess and interpret complex clinical information and data in partnership with the patient to make appropriate diagnoses, developing and implementing a plan of healthcare management including prescribing medications or refer for medical review if required.
  • Use highly developed communication skills to assess situations and empathetically impart information, which is often complex and sensitive, at all levels of interaction with others.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the healthcare management plan on an ongoing basis and initiate any further action required.
  • Use expertise in the emergency presentation of GUM-related problems, according to an agreed protocol, to triage walk-in patients and provide a telephone triage service to assess patients immediate needs and direct them to the appropriate service.
  • Use advanced expertise in health promotion and the prevention of illness to assess and advise patients with particular reference to smoking cessation, diet, recreational drug use, mental health, immunisation.
