Job summary

The Emergency Department at Chelsea andWestminster Hospital is an exciting and expanding department in one of the busiest and highest-performing non-elective trusts in the country.We are looking for enthusiastic, forward thinking team players to help build on the current excellent reputation and trust ethos.

We have several posts for experienced Emergency Medicine doctors (ST4+ equivalent) who wish to pursue a fellowship in an interest of their choosing. Fellowship postholders are awarded up to 20% of non-clinical fellowship time whilst the remaining time is spent providing Emergency Medicine care on the full rota (which is self-rostered) with the higher trainees and other senior clinical fellows.

Main duties of the job

The main service commitments of Senior Clinical Fellows will be, under the supervision of the Consultants, to supervise the FY2s, as well doing 'hands on' work alongside the other middle grades. The department has initiated new patterns of working to achieve the current targets and integral within these are the 'lead middle grade' 'resus lead' and 'rapid assessment team' which are roles undertaken by the middle grade doctors within the department.

The middle grade would also be expected to run the daily review clinic. The Consultants are very committed to teaching and post-graduate training and will ensure appropriate opportunities for professional development. The appointee will be expected to already have or to have obtained during the course of the appointment certificates in ATLS and ALS. Most of the Consultants are Instructors on these courses.

Previous postholders have been awarded a job split of up to 70:30 Emergency Medicine : Healthcare Management. The split will be agreed with the educational supervisor depending on projects or postgraduate courses that the postholder wishes to undertake, and regularly reviewed against progress demonstrated towards their PDP.

These jobs are for Senior Clinical fellows who will be based at Chelsea and Westminster Emergency Department and are expected to provide clinical cover for the department which can be self-rostered or agreed with the rota co-ordinator.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain training in simulation and obtain a post-graduate qualification in medical education. The fellowship time will be spent organising education for nurses, doctors and medical students. You will have the opportunity to arrange external courses and lead / supervise on academic projects related to EM. You will be expected to become a simulation instructor and contribute to the FY1 / FY2 teaching programme, as well as delivering in situ sim sessions in the Emergency Department.

In addition we will fund a postgraduate qualification in medical or clinical education. The 1 year post includes funding for the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. We are also offering a 3 year post which includes funding for the certificate in the first year, the diploma in the second year and the project/report in the third year leading to the Postgraduate MSc.

Management and Finance Fellowship

This is an excellent opportunity to gain an understanding of the administration and functionality of the NHS for a candidate who may in the future be looking to take on a senior roles in NHS infrastructure. The Management and Finance fellow will be offered an opportunity to complete the HFMA Advance Diploma (includes 3 modules) in healthcare business and finance and given funding towards these. They can subsequently also complete a full MBA over the next two years if they wish to.

The previous fellows were involved in departmental projects around costing in the urgent treatment centre, writing business cases. They also supported the clinical lead to implement new clinical standards in ED and prepared standard operating procedures for various indicators. Additionally they were provided opportunities to get involved in departmental, divisional and regional strategic meetings.

Previous postholders have been awarded a job split of up to 70:30 Emergency Medicine : Healthcare Management. We have an exciting opportunity for an Emergency Medicine doctor who is keen to gain experience in Medical Humanities and Ethics. The post holder will be supported in their professional and reflective development by engaging with medical ethics and the humanities, improving patient care, moral reasoning, and awareness of epistemic and social issues in emergency medicine all while maintaining clinical duties. This job is suitable for senior middle grade doctors and trainees who are motivated to broaden their experience and develop sub-speciality interest.

These jobs are for Senior Clinical fellows who will be based at Chelsea and Westminster Emergency Department and are expected to provide clinical cover for the department. During this year you will dedicate a proportion of your time (typically one day per week, or 20% FTE) to developing work in the medical humanities. This may include research and scholarship, teaching and education, creative and reflective practice.

You will be expected to concentrate this time on one main medical humanities project while also helping run the emergency department creative writing group, with evaluation of impact on staff wellbeing and communication. Examples of projects include: historical study of representations of emergency medicine or trauma in art, film, or literature; visual culture and emergency care, such as developing an exhibition of artwork by staff or patients reflecting experiences of urgency, waiting, or care; ethical aspects of informed consent in emergency situations; bias and accountability in AI-assisted triage systems.

You will attend at least one related structured course, costing not more than £800 in total, such as the Medical Ethics Short Course at Imperial College (on line or in person) and present a reflective project at departmental teaching (e.g., Ethical Challenges in A&E Practice or Narrative and Patient Perception in Emergency Medicine).
