Job summary

We are excited to offer an opportunity join or Haematology Team. This Band 7 CNS post will provide support to the new and existing Heamato- oncology patients and well as oversight for some non malignant haematological disorders. You will work collaboratively with the Haematology consultants, the day unit team and your colleagues at our Chelsea site and across the cancer team as a whole. You will join as join as we transition to a new purpose built chemotherapy day unit opening in autumn 2026

The successful candidate will have extensive experience of working with Haematology/cancer patients and the treatments they receive. Previous experience as a CNS or Associate CNS will be advantageous.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will play an on-going role in the development of the service for patients with Haematological malignancies and where relevant non-malignant haematological problems. The post holder will be the key professional involved in supporting and counselling a caseload of patients and their families through the entire cancer journey and specifically around the time of the cancer diagnosis and cancer specific treatments. The post holder will also participate in the education of all disciplines of staff working with this patient group and act as an expert resource to other professionals involved in the care of these patients. The post holder will work to ensure that cancer specific guidelines are adhered to and Department of Health standards are maintained.

The post holder will work as an integral part of the Haematology MDT.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Ensure provision of chemotherapy for haemato-oncology patients as well as other day ward based treatments such as venesection and central venous access devices management. There is an expectation that the post-holder will spend time working clinically in the day unit.

2. Have oversight of chemocare for Haematology patients to ensure timely scheduling.

3. Act as a Specialty Advisor giving evidence based advice to all staff in matters relating to the care of patients with haematological disease.

4. Lead the nurse management of patients with acute/chronic haemato-oncology disease.

5. Act as key worker for patients with haematological disease.

6. Provide evidence based information and advice for patients and their carers on all aspects of acute and chronic haematological disease.

7. Co-ordination of the patient pathway and a core member of the multidisciplinary team.

8. Promote effective communication with nursing team, patients, relatives and other health care professionals.

9. Due to the clinical nature of the role close collaboration with the Cancer Services Pharmacist Team is essential.

10. Support the AOS service

11. To provide expert nursing advice to patients with Haematological malignancies and their families throughout the course of their illness from diagnosis, assessing their needs and providing information as required.

12. To liaise with all relevant members of the multidisciplinary team in the care and support of individual patients including GPs.

13. To maintain a high profile in the clinical area, acting as a role model for other health care professionals

14. Where appropriate hold a nurse led clinic including the development of written protocols based on national standards

15. To offer advice and support on pain and symptom control liaising with the Specialist palliative care team, and make appropriate referrals to the chronic pain service.

16. To assess individual patients psychosocial and spiritual needs and refer for appropriate counselling or to other agencies

17. To help co-ordinate weekly multi-professional meetings for Haematology cancer patients to achieve high standards of MDT working .

Responsible for implementing the prersonailsed care program for Haematology patients including completing of HNAs assisting with health and well-being events and treatment summaries where appropriate

Education / leadership

1. To promote patient/carer independence through the provision of relevant teaching and support.

2. To participate in and organise study days/education programmes to raise awareness of the holistic needs of patients.

3. To develop resource and teaching packs for use by patients and/or staff in the clinical and educational setting.

6. To evaluate the need for patient support groups within the Trust.

4. To regularly audit service including eliciting the views of patients, carers and professionals ensuring patient feedback is incorporated into developments in the service.
