Locum Consultant Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 16 May 2025

Job summary

We are seeking a full-time, locum, Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery to join the dynamic West London Children's Healthcare Paediatric specialist surgery team with the post based at the Chelsea & Westminster hospital.

The successful applicants will join our paediatric orthopaedic department, consisting of a team of committed individuals who provide secondary and tertiary services for children with a wide range of orthopaedic problems. Multidisciplinary team working underpins the services that we provide and has been the foundation that has enabled us to develop and provide excellent care for children and young people with a wide variety and complexity of orthopaedic conditions. More complex patients require liaison with other teams within the division in addition to adult surgical specialties.

Main duties of the job

The paediatric orthopaedic service is currently provided by 3 full time paediatric orthopaedic surgeons and a 4th part-time consultant. In addition there are 2 full time and 2 part time specialist paediatric orthopaedic practitioners who provide subspecialist clinics in neuro-orthopaedics / gait clinics, club foot, hip screening and Pavlik harness treatment of DDH, limb length discrepancy and deformity and general musculoskeletal disorders.

Part of the working week of the paediatric orthopaedic consultants is to participate in joint clinics and MDTs with the specialist practitioners. This is essential in underpinning the provision of some of our specialised services by practitioners. The on call cover for paediatric orthopaedic patients is provided by the adult orthopaedic consultants and the orthopaedic department junior doctors; it is essential that the paediatric orthopaedic team attend the morning trauma meetings to ensure good handover, continuity of care and training of junior staff.

The applicant would be expected to participate in the current busy paediatric orthopaedic and emergency work of the department and participate in providing clinical and educational support to the extended scope physiotherapy practitioners. Multidisciplinary team working is fundamental to our provision of high quality paediatric orthopaedic care with an increasing tertiary workload.

About us

West London Children's Healthcare was formed on 1st April 2022 bringing paediatric services at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT) and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (CWFT) under a single leadership structure accountable to both Trust Boards for all elements of operational, quality, safety and financial performance. WLCH runs services from Chelsea & Westminster Hospital; Hammersmith Hospital; St Mary's Hospital and West Middlesex Hospital. In addition, two child development services operate from the Cheyne Centre and Woodfield Road.

It is recognised that significant variations in outcomes exist for children and young people in North West London. These variations are driven both by the social economic factors that impact the daily lives of CYP but also as a consequence of variation in systems, processes and access to healthcare.

WLCH has been established to drive the changes needed to reduce these variations and to improve quality, experience and outcomes across all aspects of child health. We value every member of our team and we are absolutely committed to recruiting and retaining a thriving, diverse and inclusive workforce. Every member of our team has a role to play in leading and shaping the transformation required to improve outcomes by optimising joint working, sharing best practice and constantly striving for improvement.
