Job summary

The Kobler HIV team are looking for an experienced HIV Nurse Practitioner with experience in research & development to enhance the delivery of clinical research in accordance with the Trust Research Strategy and to work clinically as an independent practitioner managing the care needs of people living with HIV.

The post holder will be a clearly identifiable senior clinical staff member, and team leader within the HIV outpatient clinic and the research department. They will have significant clinical and research experience, provide sound clinical expertise to their team, coordinate and deliver high quality care and manage research projects. They will be a role model for expert clinical care, and lead on specific research projects / management functions as delegated by the Charge Nurse.

You will be part of the friendly, dynamic and supportive team, helping to support the delivery of high quality NIHR portfolio and commercial research. In order to lead and coordinate the portfolio of studies at the clinic, you will need to be a self-motivated and clinically-experienced adult nurse, with a passion for clinical research and experience of working in the area of HIV and sexual health. The post holder will preferably hold the Non-Medical Prescriber qualification. This role is perfect for those who are already working at a Band 7 level or are a senior Band 6 with experience.

Main duties of the job

A key part of this role will be to enhance the delivery of clinical research and innovation in accordance with the Trust Strategies and to work in a clinical capacity as an independent Nurse Practitioner managing the care of people living with HIV.

The key elements of our R&D strategy include: to increase the number of UK CRN portfolio and commercial studies, increase patient participation in clinical studies and ensure that studies recruit to time and target. You will work under the management of the Clinic Manager and Lead Research Consultant, but will need to have excellent organizational skills

They will be a role model for expert clinical care, and lead on specific research projects / management functions as agreed with the clinic leads.

The individual will manage a caseload of patients with HIV requiring routine care. Additionally, the post holder will be involved in the recruitment and follow up of patients in research studies and the implementation and management of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic tools.

The post holder will hold (or be supported to obtain) the Non-Medical Prescriber qualification

It is also essential that you can plan and prioritize your workload in order to meet performance targets and deadlines; you will need to have excellent organizational skills.

You will work under the management of the Clinic Manager and the SSC Lead Consultant.

Manage a case load of patients including those with complex treatment and psycho-social needs for on-going follow-up care, including recruitment and follow up of patients in research studies and implementation/management of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic tools.

Ensure the delivery of a high quality and innovative HIV clinical service, including coordination of the administration of new antiretroviral combinations including long-acting injectables

Assess and interpret complex clinical information and data in partnership with the patient to make appropriate diagnoses, developing and implementing a plan of healthcare management including prescribing medications or refer for medical review if required.

Supervise junior nursing staff in treatment support, supporting them to assess and support patients starting or switching therapy and advising on those patients experiencing problems with adherence both within the outpatient and inpatient settings.

Supply and administer medication under Patient Group Directions or practice as a Non-Medical Prescriber.

Use highly developed communication skills to assess situations and empathetically impart information, which is often complex and sensitive, at all levels of interaction with others.

Order specific diagnostic tests and investigations, interpret findings and provide results to patients as per protocol.

Use expertise in the emergency presentation of HIV-related problems, according to an agreed protocol, to provide a telephone triage service to assess patients immediate needs and direct them to the appropriate service

Assess and support patients experiencing problems with adherence and provide treatment support.

Advise on the promotion of health and the prevention of illness, with particular reference to smoking cessation, risk behaviours, diet, immunisation, sexually transmitted infections and HIV.

Manage the annual screening of patients, including cervical cytology and in future, anal cytology.

Take a detailed sexual health history where necessary, and refer for sexual health screening, as appropriate.

Recognise and act upon situations that may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the individual.

Use highly developed knowledge and skills to assist and support the patient and their significant others in developing their understanding and ability to ensure effective self-management of HIV as a chronic disease.

Make referrals as appropriate to members of the HIV MDT team including Peer Support

Coordinate and participate in the nurse-led clinics and Triage of walk-in patients.

Act as a link between clinic and the research department, taking referrals and discussing research options with patients

Act as a clinical leader and assist in the development of clinical skills within the wider nursing team.

Lead initiatives that enhance the quality of nurse-led patient care and treatment support through policy and guideline development based on the best available evidence.
