There is an excellent opportunity for an Emergency Medicine doctor who is keen to gain training in Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) and be supported through a post graduate qualification in SEM. This job is suitable for senior middle grade doctors and trainees who are motivated to broaden their experience and develop sub-speciality interest. These jobs are for Senior Clinical fellows who will be based at Chelsea and Westminster Emergency Department and are expected to provide clinical cover for the department. If the successful candidate is studying for an MSc or Diploma in SEM these sessions can be arranged with the rota co-ordinator. The remaining time will be spent attending physio and fracture clinics, radiology sessions and gaining experience in sports medicine. SEM experience can either be arranged by the candidate, or we can help in arranging this. Two of the adult EM consultants and one of the paediatric EM consultants have post graduate qualifications in SEM. Between them they work for several National Governing Bodies and have worked at national and international level sports events. Previous postholders have been awarded a job split of up to 70:30 Emergency Medicine : SEM. The split will be agreed with the educational supervisor.
Main duties of the job
The main service commitments of Senior Clinical Fellows will be, under the supervision of the Consultants, to supervise the FY2s, as well doing 'hands on' work alongside the other middle grades. The department has initiated new patterns of working to achieve the current targets and integral within these are the 'lead middle grade' 'resus lead' and 'rapid assessment team' which are roles undertaken by the middle grade doctors within the department.
The middle grade would also be expected to run the daily review clinic. The Consultants are very committed to teaching and post-graduate training and will ensure appropriate opportunities for professional development. The appointee will be expected to already have or to have obtained during the course of the appointment certificates in ATLS and ALS. Most of the Consultants are Instructors on these courses.
