Job summary

We are looking for dedicated and enthusiastic doctors to join our Anaesthetic Department at West Middlesex Hospital at Speciality Doctor grade. The post holder will take part in one of our three on call rotas (Obstetrics, ITU, Senior obstetrics/paeds), depending on the individuals interest and experience, working together as a team and with the support of the on-call consultants.

The posts include day time activity based in main theatre, obstetric or ITU, with the opportunity to develop various skills such as USS guided regional block for orthopaedics/trauma and obstetric, ENT paediatric anaesthesia, TIVA-TCI anaesthesia, sedation outside the theatre setting, 3 modes of cardiac monitoring, USS of chest, abdomen and vessels & echocardiography.

Furthermore, our department offers a structured consultant delivered teaching program, including regular multidisciplinary simulation sessions.

Main duties of the job

The post holders will take part in a 1 in 8 full shift rota, covering day time elective theatre work, obstetrics, emergency theatres, HDU and ITU, assisting with paediatric resuscitation and emergencies in obstetrics. The post holder's role can be adapted to suit the individual interests and training needs of the candidate.

Roles and responsibilities

  • The post holders will take part in a 1 in 8 full shift rota, depending on the experience and preferences of the candidates. There are three middle-grade full-shift rotas:
    • Obstetrics
    • Intensive Care
    • Senior Registrar rota covering all areas, including paediatric emergencies

  • Day Time sessions will be in ITU/Operating theatres and/or obstetrics depending on the interests of the candidate and the needs of the Department. Most of the sessions will be under a direct supervision of a consultant.

  • The post-holder will be expected to undertake pre and post-operative assessment of patients and to liaise with surgical colleagues to ensure the most efficient use of the theatre resource.

  • He/she must have a thorough up-to-date knowledge of resuscitation techniques and undertake to update these yearly. He/she will be encouraged to update their knowledge and skills regularly by attending appropriate courses/meetings.

  • The post holder will be encouraged to attend and participate in Departmental teaching sessions, Journal Club meetings and morbidity/mortality meetings. For those without the FRCA, encouragement and help will be given to take this examination. He/she will be expected to take part in the regular audit meetings of the department and to be involved in organising and facilitating suitable audit projects for presentation.
  • The post holder will be supported for the MTI application via the Royal College of Anaesthetists if required.

  • The post holder will be expected to maintain their continuous professional development and time and funds will be given for study leave in line with Trust policy. Applications for study leave of up to 10 days per annum will normally be granted, with a budget of £900 per annum.

  • There is no relocation package available.

  • The post holder should understand that flexibility is essential; he/she may be asked to accept additional duties in emergencies or unforeseen circumstances.
