Job summary
Senior Clinical Fellows (ST4+ equivalent) in Emergency Medicine
Fixed term contract for 6-12 months. Posts are available for an August 2023 start date, but alternative start dates may be accommodated.
The Emergency Department at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation trust is a dynamic, forward thinking, and busy department with a strong focus on education, training, and research. We currently see approximately 140,000 patients per year, with a good case mix of critical care, majors, minor injuries, and primary care patients. A £12 million rebuild in 2016 has resulted in a fit for purpose, light and airy department with an aesthetic design appreciated by patients and creates an attractive working environment for staff.
Applicants are invited to join our dynamic team of 11 Consultants and 41 Junior EM doctors.
Our previous clinical fellows have been well-supported clinically, academically, and have successfully managed to join the ACCS or Higher Specialty EM training, or to obtain a CESR in Emergency Medicine.
For any informal queries please contact Dr Claire Emerson at claire.emerson@nhs.net.
Main duties of the job
The Paediatric Emergency Department is adjacent to the adult Emergency Department and is staffed by a separate nursing and medical team, however we work closely and often help with cross-cover. The Department has a dedicated ED X-ray and CT scanner. We have very good access to advanced imaging like Ultrasound and MRI when needed.
Trauma Service
Chelsea and Westminster is a member of the pan London trauma network and is a designated trauma unit. We have a flow of trauma patients which is managed by the ED staff initially and then is either referred to the appropriate specialty or transferred to the Local Major Trauma centre. We subscribe to TARN (Trauma Audit & Research Network) which allows for detailed data collection to assist with education and service improvements. The senior registrars will lead the trauma teams, with the support of our highly trained consultants, all of which are ATLS providers and most are also instructors.
About us

Both hospitals provide full clinical services, including full maternity, emergency and children's, in addition to a range of community-based services across London, such as award-winning sexual health and HIV clinics.
The Emergency Department has 9 resuscitation bays, two of which is dedicated to paediatric patients, a majors area with 21 cubicles and one theatre which is used for suturing and plastering. There is a separate Urgent Care Centre co-located within the emergency department supported by a team of Emergency Nurse Practitioners, and by GPs and ED doctors of all grades. We also have an 8 bedded emergency observation unit within the emergency department for patients who require a further period of observation (less than 24 hours) or input from the multidisciplinary rapid response team.
