Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist Post Specialising in Medical Retina

Job summary

Applications are invited for a locum consultant post in Medical Retina. This is a full-time post locum post to cover a twelve month career break.

This post is based at Aintree University Hospital, which is part of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Group, it is a 10PA full time clinical post (8.5 PA of DCC and 1.5 SPA).

Clinical activities include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal vascular disease, macular disease, general and acute ophthalmology. The post does not include an out-of-hours commitment.

The successful candidate will join an established prestigious tertiary medical retina service and will also provide general and emergency ophthalmic services within working hours (plus one in eight all day Saturday). There is no out-of-hours commitment otherwise.

The proposed start date for this appointment is 1st June 2026.

Main duties of the job

St. Paul's Eye Unit

St. Paul's Eye Unit is part of the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a merger between the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Trust and the Aintree Trust. St. Paul's is located on three sites: the Royal, Aintree and the South Liverpool Treatment Centre at Garston. Senior medical staff currently comprises almost forty substantive consultants including five clinical academics at consultant level, locum consultants, two associate specialists and six specialty doctors. In addition, two consultants from Alder Hey Children's Hospital participate in the strabismus services. Doctors in training comprise two clinical lecturers, specialist trainees and sub-specialty fellows.

  • Four years' experience in ophthalmology as a postgraduate trainee

Desirable

Qualifications

  • Fellowship qualification (FRCOphth, FRCS, FEBO or equivalent)
