Consultant in Restorative Dentistry

Job responsibilities

Our large and diverse department provides diagnostic, advice and treatment services for the local population as well as secondary/tertiary care across the breadth of Restorative Dentistry. The department is active in the management of high priority patients and involved in multi-disciplinary patient management across the region and within LUDH.

We have close links with Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Special Care Dentistry, Oral Medicine, and OMFS and have excellent on-site laboratory facilities for all aspects of prosthodontics care.

Many of our existing Consultants and Honorary Consultants have specialty and sub-specialty interests including endodontics, periodontology, toothwear, oncology, implant rehabilitation, hypodontia, xerostomia, fixed prosthodontics, cleft lip and palate and sleep medicine.

The department supports the clinical training of Dental Core Trainees, Specialty Registrars and an Academic Clinical Fellow. There are postgraduate students training in Endodontics.

The successful applicant would be expected to be involved in the teaching and training of specialty registrars and dental core trainees alongside undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The department is served by in house laboratories for removable and fixed prosthodontics with close co-operation for complex technical work. In-house intra-oral scanning and digital production laboratory processes are under development.

A part time dental hygienist and dental therapist support the work of the department.

The post is that of Consultant in Restorative Dentistry (0.6 WTE) based at Liverpool University Dental Hospital

The post holder is expected to have a high level of knowledge and expertise in the field of Restorative Dentistry and sub specialty interests in areas such as management of facial pain, complex removable prosthodontics, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, dental materials science. They should have an innovative approach to patient care, teaching, and management.

The post holder will be expected to work under the line management of the Divisional Medical Director of Liverpool University Dental Hospital and work closely with the Specialty Lead for Restorative Dentistry

The post holder will be expected to conduct new patient and treatment activity, to maintain required clinical service and provide consultant cover as and when necessary.

The appointee will be involved in teaching and training of dental core trainees, specialty registrars and post-CCST trainees

The post holder will be expected to liaise with dental & medical colleagues in other specialties at LUDH and LUHFT.

here may be opportunities to be involved in the teaching of undergraduates and postgraduate students. The post holder is responsible to the School to discharge such duties, with the award of the appropriate University of Liverpool honorary contract.

The post holder will help to foster good relationships between the Dental Hospital and General Dental Practitioners, Community Dental Services and other health care providers. Thepost-holder will be expected to participate in continuing dental education meetings and in quality improvement initiatives and is expected to work within the Trusts Clinical Governance frameworks

The post holder will have responsibility for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and continuing medical and dental activity, locally and nationally

The post holder will be expected to engage in their own continuing professional development and to provide continuing dental education for other staff.

Registration

Essential

• Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council
• On the Restorative Dentistry Specialist List of the UK General Dental Council.
• On the Prosthodontics Specialist List of the UK General Dental Council

Desirable

• On additional Specialist List of the UK General Dental Council (periodontics, endodontics)

Professional Qualifications

Essential

• Possession of a CCST in Restorative Dentistry or within 6 months of attainment
• Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Restorative Dentistry or equivalent

Desirable

• Other qualification in Restorative Dentistry e.g. M Pros, MSc, Professional Doctorate

Clinical

Essential

• Experience in the multidisciplinary management of Restorative patients
• Experience in prosthodontics, endodontics and periodontics
• Experience and expertise in the management of patients complex restorative needs including complex occlusion and removable prosthodontics
• Experience and expertise in the multi-disciplinary management of facial pain patients
• Experience in management of medically complex patients including those with allergies in relation to dental materials

Teaching

Essential

• Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching
• Experience in clinical supervision of DCTs, StRs and postgraduates

Desirable

• Teaching qualification
• Teaching Specialist Restorative Dentistry at a National and International level.

Quality Improvement

Essential

• Effective participation in clinical audits/service evaluations/quality improvement programmes
• Experience in incident management and governance systems
• Experience in appraisal of others

Desirable

• Lead role in delivery of QI initiatives

Research

Essential

• Ability to appraise scientific literature critically

Desirable

• Publications in peer reviewed journals
• Participation in clinical research
• Participation in research relevant to Restorative Dentistry
• Research qualification (e.g. MRes, PhD)

Management

Essential

• Experience in the day-today clinical management of a Restorative Dentistry clinic

Desirable

• day clinical management of a Restorative Dentistry clinic Clinical leadership experience in Restorative dentistry
