Full time (0.5 WTE Amputee Rehab / 0.5 WTE Prehab)
Applications are invited from Physiotherapists who are looking to develop specialist skills in the assessment, rehab and provision of Prosthetics & Assessment and Treatment in Prehab. The successful full time post holder will be expected to work equally between the prosthetic service and the Prehabilitation service, with set consecutive days in each clinic. Multi-disciplinary working is integral in practice, the successful applicant must be committed to team working and the development of learning opportunities for others.
Main duties of the job
Prosthetics and Wheelchair Centre (PAWC)
This 0.5 of the B6 post is based within the Prosthetics and Wheelchair Centre, Aintree Site, Liverpool University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT).
Referrals into the Prosthetic service are accepted for clients of all ages, children and adults, both new and established amputees, clinics are held within the Prosthetic and Wheelchair Centre.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a broad base of generic experience in the field of physical disability. Previous experience of vascular, amputee rehabilitation, gait analysis, prosthetics is desirable but not essential.
Prehabilitation Service
This 0.5 post is based within the Prehabilitation Clinic at Aintree hospital. The Prehab team cover some clinics across the LUHFT sites.
Referrals into Prehab are accepted from members of the surgical and pre-op MDT to prepare patients physically and mentally for their procedure with the aim of reducing any side effects that could slow down recovery.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a broad base of generic experience working with patients with a variety of chronic conditions. The candidate will also need to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively educate and motivate patients as well as demonstrating an ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. Previous experience of leading exercise groups and working in surgery/cancer care is desirable but not essential.

Main responsibilities in Prosthetics
- Assess new and established amputee patient, identifying and agreeing through shared decision physiotherapy goals.
- Assess the patients and provide a bespoke exercise programme to increase their power and control to help with using the limb, achieving safe transfers (with or without the limb), or preventing contractures.
- Support the MDT in decisions around if a client will be safe to have a limb.
- If the amputee patient is going to be provided with a limb, work with the patient and prosthetist around fit of limb and gait retraining.
- Assess for and prescribe mobility aids as required.
- Complete nationally agreed outcome measures.
- Contribute to Microprocessor knee (MPK) trials.
- Supervise Band 3 physiotherapy assistant and students.
Main responsibilities in Prehabilitation
- Conduct comprehensive prehabilitation assessments of patients scheduled for major abdominal cancer surgery.
- Evaluate patients physical condition, functional capacity, and any existing musculoskeletal or neuromuscular issues that may impact their surgical and post-operative outcomes.
- Develop tailored prehabilitation plans for each patient based on their unique needs and medical history.
- Explain the prehabilitation program, its benefits, and the exercises involved, ensuring patients understand and are motivated to participate.
- Provide emotional support and motivation to patients throughout the prehabilitation process, ensuring they feel confident and empowered to participate in their recovery journey.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of the prehabilitation program, working closely with the team to enhance patient outcomes and overall program effectiveness.
- Supervise assistant staff and students.
