Axess Drug and Alcohol Practitioner

Job summary

The overall aim of this role is to empower vulnerable groups within local communities to make positive choices regarding substance use including alcohol, that negatively impacts on sexual health and relationships. Focus on reducing the incidence of; sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies including teenage pregnancies, the transmission and late diagnosis of HIV are also core components.

The principal target groups that axess Sexual Health outreach provides services to are;

o Commercial Sex Workers

o Homeless Clients

o Drug Users

o Men who have sex with men

o BMEA communities

o Students and young people

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

  • Support service users to provide information and advice in relation to substance misuse which has an increased impact on risk of HIV and STI transmission.

  • Improve access and signpost to appropriate services for clients with substance misuse issues
  • Provide health promotion and risk reduction around substance misuse
  • Work within a defined SOP to see clients in a sexual health setting for time limited 1:1 work specifically around risk reduction and behaviour change
  • Work with Outreach teams for targeted local work within axess areas and ensure robust pathways in/out of specialist in-reach clinics.

The post holder will also be required to work as an accountable practitioner working on their own in community settings, making decisions according to policy and protocol. Hours of work will be flexible to include evening and weekends across the axess regional footprint as required.

Job responsibilities

Provide information and health education for clients diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, providing support and onward referral as required

Working within a defined SOP to provide time limited 1:1 work for clients specifically around risk reduction and behaviour change, using evidenced based tools such as Motivational Interviewing and Behavioural Change models. (Where appropriate and agreed provide psychosexual work within registered scope of practice. Assessing all factors which might negatively affect a clients sexual health in reference to substance misuse, and referring to appropriate specialist services e.g., Psychology/Psychiatry & Alcohol & Drug services)

Ensure at all times that the clients identity and the confidential nature of the information obtained is respected in accordance with the appropriate confidentiality and data protection regulations, within clinic, outreach and off site services

Facilitate the recall of clients as part of caseload for follow-up by letter, telephone or visit. To exchange relevant information about clients and contacts with other Sexual Health clinics as necessary.

Provide initial crisis intervention, assessment and appropriate referral for those clients attending the clinic with associated problems

Offer information and support, to deal with enquiries from, both the general public and health professionals about Chem Sex. Referral to drug and alcohol services for other drug/alcohol related interventions for patients who present in clinic
