Job summary

The successful candidate will competently perform a range of radiographic techniques, effectively plan and prioritise their own workload, and provide guidance and supervision to other staff members to ensure the delivery of high-quality, responsive diagnostic imaging within a collaborative team environment.

Under the delegation of the Dental Principal Radiographer and Education Lead, the post holder will also contribute to the clinical education and training of staff and students within the department.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an effective member of the team, delivering a high standard of X-ray and Cone Beam CT services with a strong emphasis on outstanding patient care.

They will be expected to maintain a consistently high standard of work and actively contribute to the continuous improvement of radiographic practices and patient care within Liverpool Dental Hospital.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Making informed decisions by assessing patient records and referral information to select the most appropriate imaging intervention from a range of options, ensuring optimal outcomes.
  • Participating in the vetting of Cone Beam CT examinations.
  • Communicating effectively with Trust staff, including support staff, professional colleagues, managers, and consultants, to ensure imaging procedures are appropriate to the patient's condition.
  • Providing specialist advice to junior staff and colleagues, acting as a role model, and playing an active role in maintaining and improving staff morale across all staff groups.
  • Deputising for the Principal Radiographer when required, including the fair and effective allocation of tasks to team members to manage departmental workload efficiently.

In addition to the main duties of the role, the post holder will also be expected to:

  • Explain procedures clearly to patients to ensure their full understanding and cooperation throughout the examination.
  • Develop a thorough working knowledge of all relevant equipment within the department and ensure competency frameworks for all imaging equipment are completed and reviewed annually.
  • Adhere to statutory Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) and undertake the duties of an IR(ME)R Operator, ensuring all practical tasks that may influence patient radiation dose or image quality are performed correctly and in line with documented procedures.
  • Ensure imaging requests are clear and appropriate, in accordance with Royal College of Radiologists guidelines. Take appropriate action when requests do not meet these standards and provide guidance to junior staff as needed.
  • Use both computerised and manual documentation methods to maintain accurate patient imaging records, ensuring compliance with the Data Protection Act when handling patient information.
  • Counsel and mentor staff to support their welfare and understanding of their roles. Provide indirect supervision for Band 5 Radiographers and direct supervision for Assistant Practitioners, supporting their personal and professional development.
  • Provide supervision and training for Student Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners, Imaging Assistants, Dental Students, Dental Nurses, and Dental Therapists. This includes conducting student assessments in line with specified requirements.
  • Regularly access and monitor the Trust email account, as it is a key communication tool across the organisation.
  • Log Datix incident forms for any adverse events or near misses. Provide witness statements to support incident investigations and ensure that any faults with equipment, fixtures, fittings, or the department environment are reported to the appropriate personnel.
