Trainee Advanced Practitioner - Acute Medicine

The closing date is 20 February 2026

Job summary

We're excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a nurse or AHP with at least five years' acute medicine experience to join our team of Advanced Practitioners in the Acute Medicine Department at the Royal Liverpool Hospital. You'll be joining a supportive group of eight qualified Advanced Practitioners and four trainees who are passionate about high-quality patient care.

If you're a dynamic, forward-thinking clinician who's eager to deepen your clinical expertise and pursue a master's degree in advanced health care practice, we'd love to hear from you.

This post is aimed at clinicians who already hold a minimum of 20 Level 7 credits relevant to advanced practice and who are motivated to complete their MSc through a supported two- or three-year programme, undertaken alongside a structured clinical portfolio.

Essential Criteria

  • Minimum of five years' post-qualification experience relevant to acute medicine.
  • Trainee ACP:
    • Applicants working towards the ACP apprenticeship or those who can demonstrate recent Level 7 study will be considered.
    • A minimum of clinical examination and diagnostics is required
    • Clinicians will be employed underAnnexe 21 until all academic and clinical requirements are completed, with the expectation that these will be achieved within a three-year timeframe.

Main duties of the job

The ACP role within Acute Medicine is predominantly clinical, with approximately 15% dedicated to leadership, education, and research. This position offers the opportunity to work as an integral part of the medical team. You will contribute to daily ward rounds, support clinics, and clerk patients referred to the Acute Medicine service.

In this role, you will develop the skills to perform comprehensive clinical assessments, request and interpret appropriate investigations, and confidently initiate individualised treatment plans. You will manage patients within the acute inpatient setting while also delivering care through established ambulatory pathways or virtual review services in the outpatient environment.

During your training, you will be fully supported to develop a robust clinical portfolio that evidences your progression across all four pillars of Advanced Practice.

As a qualified Advanced Practitioner, you will work autonomously within your scope of practice, delivering high-quality, safe, and effective clinical care. Your practice will align with the standards outlined in the Multi-Professional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice in England, as well as the NMC Principles of Advanced Practice where applicable. You will also be expected to maintain and continue developing a professional portfolio once qualified.
