Job summary
We are looking to recruit a motivated and reliable Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) Band 3, with good communication skills, to work as part of our integrated Clinical Chemistry and Immunology Team. The main duties will include the pre- and post-analytical processing of patient specimens for Immunology and Biochemistry, and various laboratory duties supporting the biomedical scientists.
We provide a full 24/7 service supported by a shift system (Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions apply) including weekends and Bank Holidays. Previous laboratory and/or Specimen Reception experience would be an advantage.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be expected to handle and process a range of human biological samples to prepare for appropriate sample analysis and support the BMS team in carrying range of technical duties to provide a comprehensive range of analyses/investigations in the provision of the Clinical Chemistry and Immunology service.
Ensure the confidentiality of patient records and data according to Data Protection Act 1998, GDPR and Caldicott Guidelines
To perform all laboratory duties diligently and with due care and consideration to the health, safety and welfare of oneself and others.
Undergo on the job training to develop competence and confidence to perform technical duties independently.
Organise own work and ensure that results that have been produced are validated and quality controlled.
Willingness to work 7 days including Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays

- To receive and collate patients samples when they first arrive in the laboratory and perform the preliminary processing of specimens prior to analysis.
- To store and keep detailed archive of samples and perform any clerical duties required.
- To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of new developments in the laboratory.
- To bring to the attention of BMS staff any problem specimens, urgent requests, leaking samples or any specimens that do not collate to the request form.
- Notify senior BMS staff of stock usage and what needs to be ordered.
- To report any adverse incidents or non-conformities or breaches of health and safety to a BMS or senior BMS.
- Temperature monitoring of fridge, freezers, incubators and the environment.
- General housekeeping including, removal of waste from the department, cleaning of safety cabinets, centrifuges and work surfaces, prepares disinfectants for use, regularly defrosts fridges and freezers.
- Provides wards and clinics with Cryoglobulin sample pick up and transport.
- Assists BMS staff with the retrieval of samples for processing and sending away samples to reference laboratories.
- To attend laboratory meetings and encourage to participate in CPD.
- To participate in Quality activities, such as audit and investigation of non-conformities.
- To participate in H&S activities, such as risk and COSHH assessment.
