Job summary

his is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Infection to join our friendly existing team. The post holder will help deliver high quality infection care for the city of Liverpool, regional specialist care for theNorth West, and nationally recognised services in Tropical Medicine and High Consequence Infectious Diseases (HCID). This post is open to applicants on the GMC Specialist Register for Infectious Diseases (or eligible within 6 months of interview date). Applications are welcome from individuals with either ID or Tropical Medicine CCT with either GIM or MM/MV dual accreditations who can contribute to our broad range of clinical services and we encourage potential candidates to visit and discuss their interest.

Main duties of the job

This role is offered as a 10PA full time NHS contract. The outline 10PA job plan includes 7.5-8.25 DCC PAs and 1.5 core Supporting Programmed Activity sessions (SPAs) with all Consultants are expected to have educational supervisor responsibilities (0.25 per trainee, maximum 1PA). Mentoring is available for all new Consultants. On call commitments will be performed on a pro-rata basis and will include a combination of weekend and on call working which can be taken as an additional 1 PA or annualised on discussion with the Co-Clinical Directors. Discussions regarding flexible working are encouraged.

While this role is offered as a full time Consultant in Infectious Diseases, shared appointments with Universities (Uol/LSTM), Medical Microbiology/Virology and Acute and General Medicine may be available. This should be discussed further with Co-Clinical Director prior to application.

Job responsibilities

The post holders will be located in the Directorate of Tropical and Infectious Diseases within the Division of Medicine.

The appointee will be based in LUHFT with the majority of clinical work at Royal Liverpool University Hospital but clinical services will be required at Aintree and Broadgreen Hospital sites as required. By agreement the role may involve peripheral clinics. The main duties and job plan are outlined below. The outline 10PA job plan includes 7.5-8.25 DCC PAs (including 2-2.5 non direct clinical PAs) and 1.75-2.5 supporting Programmed Activity sessions (SPAs) where all Consultants are expected to have educational supervisor responsibilities and supported to take additional managerial responsibilities as able.

While this role is offered as a full time Consultant in Infectious Diseases, shared appointments with Universities (Uol/LSTM), Medical Microbiology/Virology and Acute and General Medicine may be available. This should be discussed further with Co-Clinical Director prior to application.

On call commitments will be performed on a pro-rata basis and will include a combination of weekend and on call working. Weekday consultant on-call (Monday 9am Friday 5pm) is rotated between the duty ward consultants in alternating one-week blocks, annualised it equates to roughly 1 in 8. Weekend on call (Friday 5pm-Monday 9am) is on a rotational basis with a roughly 1 in 7 commitment, this can be taken as an additional 1 PA or incorporated into an annualised job plan through discussion with the clinical lead.

Dedicated 1.5 core SPA (annualised) for audit, CME, appraisal, and revalidation is included in annualised job plans. As an active teaching and training department dedicated SPA time is given in addition to core SPA (currently 0.25 SPA per trainee for formal educational or clinical supervisor roles). Additional SPA may be negotiated as the post holder becomes established and develops agreed trust objectives.

  1. To take responsibility at consultant level in outpatient clinics of the Tropical and Infectious Disease Unit including HIV clinics of the Liverpool Centre for Sexual Health, and tropical clinics of LSTM (if requested and appropriate)

  1. To take responsibility at a consultant level in the OPAT/Ambulatory services and to assist in the further development of the service.

  1. To take responsibility at consultant level for continuing inpatient care of patients within the TIDU bedbase.

  1. To help develop and maintain multidisciplinary clinical networks and care pathways appropriate to the evolving needs of diverse groups of patients. This may include development of joint clinics and virtual clinics with neighbouring Hospital and Community based Trusts, and engaging with and involving patient representative groups.

  1. The appointee will be expected to take part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the Trust and in association with the Universities and School of Tropical Medicine.

  1. Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, the post-holder will be expected to observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust.

  1. Consultants are expected to take a lead role in promoting infection control initiatives. This includes acting as role models for junior medical staff, along with the ward manager, to promote hand hygiene compliance, implementation of high impact interventions, encouraging participation of junior medical staff and multidisciplinary review of infections that still occur.
