Job summary

An exciting opportunity for a full-time Macmillan Support Worker has arisen to join the friendly, motivated Macmillan Information support team. The service delivers a high standard of support to patients, their families, carers and friends, with accurate information on all aspects of cancer and its effects on patients available to the public, patients and relatives from the time that cancer is suspected through the patients' treatment and recovery, or palliation, death and bereavement. This includes sensitive, supportive advice at time of need.

Main duties of the job

For this post you will need to be well organised and have good communication skills and be computer literate. Working within a small team you will have the ability to work both under supervision and independently across hospital sites.

You will use your knowledge of cancer care to support people living with and affected by cancer, and perform holistic assessments, choosing the most appropriate approach to establishing the individual information and support needs of each client.

You will provide advice and emotional support and signposting to service users, patients, carers, friends or family members via email, on the phone or face to face regarding cancer diagnosis, prognosis, treatment , living with cancer and bereavement.

You will have contact with those who are worried they may have cancer or are awaiting test results and who require assistance and signposting appropriately.

As we are a hospital-based service, you will be required to visit wards and outpatient areas to support service users.
