Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for an ophthalmic technician to join St Paul's Eye Unit, Division of Ophthalmology team at Aintree University Hospital Elective Care Centre. This is a fixed term one year appointment .

We are looking for a reliable person who is able to pay close and accurate attention to detail. You must also demonstrate excellent communication skills, a caring manner with all ages and abilities and be able to empathise with and support patients and team members. Previous experience of working in an ophthalmic environment is desirable.

Hours to be worked flexibly between Monday - Saturday, 08:00 - 20:00, according to service need.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist and support clinicians in provision of ophthalmic diagnostic and therapy services
  • Participate in the development of self and others
  • Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients
  • Perform subjective tests of visual function
  • Perform objective assessments using ocular imaging
  • Assist in ophthalmic diagnostic procedures
  • Provide administrative support to the Ophthalmic Diagnostic & Therapy services

Job responsibilities

Clinical

  • Measure vision and visual acuity for distance & near as appropriate using Snellen and / or LogMAR charts
  • Perform autorefraction as required
  • Refer patients for refraction by an optometrist in accordance with agreed protocols.
  • Measure spectacle prescriptions using automated & manual focimeters
  • Perform visual field examination using the Humphrey Visual Field Analyser
  • Perform rebound tonometry
  • Perform OCT and colour retinal imaging
  • Accurately & legibly record test results in patient casenotes / ophthalmic database
  • Seek guidance from a senior member of staff when clinical results necessitate
  • Instil dilating eye drops in accordance with protocols

Managerial / Leadership

  • Manage own clinical workload
  • Ensure a safe working environment, reporting any risks or equipment faults to the relevant Speciality Lead
  • Monitor stock levels of consumables
  • Undertake other administrative duties as specified by the Speciality Leads / Manager
  • Deliver reliable, effective customer service and contribute to its improvement
