Job summary

Band 7 Critical Care Technician

An opportunity has arisen within the Liverpool University Foundation Hospital Trust for a Band 7 Critical Care Technician.

Key responsibilities of the role will be to manage, lead and support the team in embedding new pathways and processes in our new purpose built critical care department.

This post is applicable to NMC and HCPC registration categories.

Main duties of the job

This will consist of all aspects of management on a day-to-day basis including planning, allocation and evaluation of the new work streams carried out by teams.

Provide specialist knowledge to all staff on the Department.

To promote a critical, analytical approach to the delivery of patient careensuring that the critical care environment is responsive to current issues.

Ensure that all existing procedures and protocols relating to the care ofpatients are reviewed and updated as required.

Develop methods for identifying, maintaining and improving the quality of patient care through facilitation of best practice and clinical benchmarking.

Exercise strong and effective leadership, acting as an exemplary role model for the department team.

Maintain adequate staff cover and skill mix on the department through effective use of staffing rotas.

Ensure staff compliance with mandatory training and maintain currentrecords.

Ensure effective communication with patients.

Monitor and manage staff sickness/absence following the Trust guidelines,and liaise with the Matron as necessary.

Act at all times in a manner that upholds the reputation of the Trust andsafeguards the wellbeing and dignity of patients and their relatives.

Act always in accordance with the NMC/HCPC Code of Conduct and Guidance documents and maintain active status on NMC and HCPC Register.

  • Anaesthetic link person to support Critical Care, Theatre PEF teams and Doctor training.
  • Lead for management of student ODP/Anaesthetic Nurses when on placement.
  • Airway training for all departments, including Theatre Recovery with Intubation/Extubation training.
  • Difficult Airway Training
  • Tracheostomy/Percutaneous and stacker training.
  • Bronchoscopy/Scope and stacker training.
  • Ventilator/CPAP training.
  • Support and integrate with current Critical Care SCITT and ALERT courses.
  • Patient transfer training for MRI, CT and in-out of hospital transfers.
  • Contribute with the process of training with the new HCID unit

Close working partnership with Critical Care PEFs including education and Sim sessions related to equipment, procedures, transfers.

Role Development opportunities:

  • Providing a role model with invaluable experience to enhance patient safety, all staff training and mentoring.
  • Improvement with communication on the department for all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Fast response time with attending emergency situations.
  • Attending Doctors patient handovers thus optimising daily workload.
  • Providing less delays with patient treatment than current practice.
  • The management of effectively collaborating with Theatre ODP/Anaesthetic Nurse Coordinator to produce a roster to display on the Critical Care Department for ODP/Anaesthetic Nurse daily and out of hours shift cover.
  • ROTEM core trainer for staff and would manage/complete ROTEMs when required.
  • To create a more robust training program for all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate with Clinical Governance, Audits, Research, Infection Control, COSHH ensuring staff are working with trust policies, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Medical Engineering Anaesthetic equipment lead for new product teaching, service maintenance, replacement, and faults.
  • To design a user-friendly efficient data base providing accurate equipment issues and location using ASSET-Management system.
  • Supporting the Trust HR strategy by improving working lives with commitment to looking after staff.
  • To provide motivation and support for all staff allowing them to become more confident and to encourage them to work within the Critical Care environment.
