The NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS) is recruiting! Are you a dynamic and enthusiastic pharmacy professional who would like to manage and shape the future direction of travel of the NHS SPS?
The NHS SPS supports the NHS to develop best practice systems of work, related to buying, making and using medicines. The service provides leadership, instructive and informative specialist input and operational support to all elements of medicines optimisation across the system. It achieves this via one of its four functions: Medicines Advice, Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance, Medicines Procurement and Medicines Use and Safety with the premise to "do once and share". The post-holder will be working with the SPS Hub Leads to ensure the operational delivery of our service against the SPS National Service Specification. This is a newly configured post created as the final piece of the SPS Transformation process and will work directly with Dr Justine Scanlan, Head of the SPS to configure and manage the service moving forward.
Main duties of the job
This is a full-time role for a senior pharmacist, accountable to the Head of the NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service. The primary role is to support the Head of Service to formulate, refine and implement SPS organizational strategy, policy and delivery of SPS corporate objectives.

Essential
- Vocational Masters degree/equivalent
- Postgraduate management qualification or equivalent
- Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician (Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council)
Desirable
- Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society or equivalent leadership body
- Post-graduate level original research and/or publication in an area relevant specifically to the delivery of Medicines Optimisation
- Post-graduate management qualification
- Post-graduate procurement qualification
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- Detailed knowledge and experience of working with Medicines Optimisation and/or medicines decision making groups within the NHS
- Detailed knowledge of Medicines Optimisation as it pertains to both primary and secondary care
- Understanding and appreciation of local and national NHS (including pharmaceutical) policy.
- Knowledge of medicines procurement, pharmaceutical QA, its current provision across England through SPS, and its role in delivering Medicines Optimisation
- Understanding and appreciation of local and national NHS (including pharmaceutical) policy
- Experience in purchasing / contracting
- Understanding of underpinning medicines legislation i.e. Medicines Act and Misuse of Drugs Act, Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines (Duthie), Good Distribution and Manufacturing Practice, Medicines Guidance Note 14 etc.
- Experience of working with medicines commissioning and decision-making structures within the NHS to influence change
- Experience of working at national level to enable Medicines Optimisation implementation
