Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a motivated Radiographer with a specialist interest in Interventional Radiology imaging to work within the Radiology department and interventional suites at Liverpool University Hospital based at the Aintree site.

The post holder will provide clinical leadership during the week as well as being part of an on call service, which requires clinical competence in both IR, Vascular Hybrid theatres and Cardiac Cath lab imaging.

The successful post holder will support the ongoing development of the IR service and will be involved in both clinical and management aspects of the IR service including working with other specialist areas.

Main duties of the job

The role requires working as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering high quality imaging using a patient centred approach. There is also a commitment to providing out of hours service as part of this role.

The Interventional dept has 2 IR theatres, 1 Ultrasound/multi-purpose room and a 5 bedded recovery area. The service covers a wide variety of procedures as the dept supports many specialist services based on the Aintree site including Regional Trauma, MFU, Regional Vascular and Regional Stroke unit.

The Vascular Hybrid theatre complex comprises of 3 theatres - 2 Hybrid theatres containing Siemens Artis Phenos and 1 open theatre. This complex covers a multitude of vascular procedures including EVAR, FEVAR, BEVAR, peripheral vascular work and is a leading centre in complex endovascular work.

The Cardiac Cath Lab is a single plane lab that undertakes Permanent Pacemaker implantations and Diagnostic coronary angiograms

Key elements of the role are:

  • Personnel management on a daily basis including sickness management, rostering, appraisals and HR related issues.
  • Clinical competency in all areas of IR imaging including on call commitment
  • To work in collaboration with the Nursing Lead to manage capacity and demand of activity in Interventional Theatres
  • Attendance at meetings to represent IR
  • Radiation Protection Supervisor role and attendance at relevant meetings regarding this to represent IR

Job responsibilities

CLINICAL

1. In conjunction with the lead nurse be responsible for the day-to-day management of the IR Suite at the Base location site of LUFHT and to ensure service standardisation within the 24/7 hour service. This includes providing highly specialised services for other directorates as part of the Interventional Radiology team, e.g. Cardiology, Vascular services.

2. To take the radiographic lead in the multi-disciplinary environment to support the NHS Long term plan.

3. To act as the radiographic clinical expert in their relevant field, this includes decisions re further imaging or the administration of contrast media during examinations. 4. To liaise closely with lead clinicians thus contributing to the effective running of the service.

5. To partake in IR vetting and appointing patients.

6. To be responsible for the monitoring and ordering where appropriate of radiology consumables within the IR theatres.

7. To participate in multi-disciplinary team working.

8. Maintain a team of radiographers to a level of competency where they can operate the unit smoothly in times of the post holders absence and are able to provide a first class service. Collaborate with other lead radiographers and modality lead to enable suitable rotation of specialist radiographers, ensuring service needs are met and radiographers competencies are maintained and developed.

9. To practice within the rules of the Health Professions Council.

10. To ensure effective communication with patients, carers and all health care professionals about all aspects of patient care.

11. To maintain accurate documentation pertinent to the examination.

12. Supervision of and participating in training of all grades of radiographers in IR.

13. Act as a Radiation Protection Supervisor.

RADIATION PROTECTION

1. Ensure radiation doses to every patient are as low as reasonably practical (ALARP) consistent with a diagnostic result.

2. To work to radiographic protocols and policies are required under the ionising regulations.

3. To comply with IR(ME)R 2017 & IRR 2017.

PLANNING

1. To be involved in the planning/design of appropriate areas within the department.

2. To be involved in the evaluation and selection of relevant equipment for their area.

3. To be involved in Departmental Business Planning

4. Participate in discussions regarding changes to policies that impact Interventional Theatres and other areas of Radiology and the Trust.
