Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 3 Dietetic Assistant working with a team of Dietitians in the acute hospital setting here at LUHFT.

You will have support from a clinical supervisor to support you in your personal and professional development, undertaking competency training for this role.

Main duties of the job

The role involves patient assessments, reviewing and monitoring patients on oral nutrition support and provide dietary education to patients at ward level. You will also support Dietitians with administrative tasks and liaising with Community services as needed. You will be working within a friendly and supportive team of qualified dietitians and assistant practitioners who are committed to delivering high quality, patient centred care. It is an exciting time to join a team that is developing new ways of working with colleagues across sites.

The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills, the ability to work flexibly and the willingness to develop new skills. You must have an interest in nutrition and clinical working in an acute inpatient setting. Previous experience within a healthcare environment and knowledge of nutrition is desirable.

Training and skills development will be supported through clinical supervision with a qualified Dietitian.

Patient assessments on inpatient wards under supervision from Dietitian. This will involve checking blood biochemistry, weights/weight history, Body Mass Index calculations and estimation of nutritional requirements.

To provide nutrition and dietary advice suitable for the patients medical, social and cultural factors which is evidence-based.

To negotiate change with patients to enable them to achieve dietary targets set.

To monitor and review nutritional care plans against outcome measures and adjust care plan to facilitate achievement of goals

Assisting patients to make appropriate menu choices suitable for their dietary needs and providing written dietary information and advice where indicated and trained to do so as advised by the Supervising Dietitian.

To assist in developing a range of educational resources which have a clear evidence-base and which are acceptable to users of the service and their carers.

To advise Dietitians and/or Pharmacy regarding stock levels of nutritional products at ward level.

To be aware of limitations of their scope of practice and the requirement to handover complex patients to the qualified Dietitian.
