Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part time Surgical First Assistant in Surgery to provide highly specialised surgical assistance in all aspects of surgery to Consultant Surgeons and junior medical staff in the operating theatres. The post holder will be expected to understand advanced surgical techniques and make professional and clinical decision for which the surgical assistant is accountable.

Main duties of the job

The role of the Surgical First Assistant is a multi-disciplinary inter-professional role and whilst there may be some variations in responsibility and clinical roles this job description outlines the key areas of responsibility for these post holders whilst working within the Trust.

* To have an advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology.* To have an advanced knowledge of current elective and emergency surgical techniques and equipment required to achieve the optimal outcomes in surgery* To understand the principles of surgical technique required for variousdisease entitles requiring surgery

  • To have undertaken advanced scrub practitioner surgical skills course
  • To have evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Advanced life support
  • Evidence of extended clinical skills/assessment

Experience

  • Demonstrable post registration experience
  • Familiar with care of the critically ill/unstable patient
  • Proven leadership and management skills
  • To have experience as theatre nurse within surgical theatres
  • Experience of working effectively within a MDT setting. Flexible approach to work.

Knowledge

Essential

  • To possess clinical credibility to influence across both professional and organisational boundaries
  • To maintain basic life support skills
  • Advanced IT skills
  • Accept personal responsibility for identifying own learning needs and professional development in liaison with the Unit Manager for Theatres / Clinical lead
  • Assist in facilitating a learning environment conductive to the acquisition of further knowledge and skills
  • Contribute to the development of teaching strategies appropriate to the learning needs of junior medical staff/colleagues
