Job description

Job responsibilities

This is a twelve month post. The goal of the Fellowships is to take a peri-CCT, or equivalent, Orthopaedic Surgeon and, in a twelve month training programme, take them to a level at which they are capable of an independent practice in orthopaedics, specialising in Hand and Wrist Surgery. Service development may involve some alteration in the program during the attachment.

The Fellow is under the supervision of Mr Brown and Mr Cheung. The ability to work flexibly and as a team will be essential, with good communication skills to relate to both fellow staff and patients. This enables the successful candidate to experience the whole range of experience offered by the unit.

The post supports the clinical activity of both the Hand Team and the wider orthopaedic department. There is on-call commitment including weekend operating. The candidate will have time for research. The post offers directly supervised operating with Consultant support to practise acquired surgical skills.

Once their competencies have been assessed the Hand Fellows take part in a 1 in 8 weekend day trauma list, with onsite supervision. This is remunerated as extra payments at a rate of £75 per hour. This affords the successful candidate to also hone their non-technical and supervisory skills in preparation for their Consultant careers.
