Specialist Speech and Language therapist to work within the Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service

Main duties of the job

Job Purpose

  • To provide an effective and efficient speech and language therapy service to children with communication and/or swallowing difficulties. This post is within the Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Team for pre-school.
  • To manage a specialist caseload/provision for children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), including those with severe and complex needs, in a variety of settings. Duties will include assessment, diagnosis, therapy (both group and/or individual, as appropriate), planning therapy programmes and discharge of clients
  • To work collaboratively with Band 7 therapists for the ongoing evaluation and development of the SLT service delivery to support children with SLCN
  • To work as part of the multidisciplinary team, including other health professionals, and education staff
  • To provide support for other members of the Speech and Language Therapy team including Speech and Language Therapists and Assistants

The Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Team is a very caring and supportive team to work in. We provide supervision to all members of the team at various levels e.g. peer support, clinical supervision and managerial supervision. All members of the team are approachable and happy to help, where possible, within the busy working environment.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

  1. Undertake clinical work with individuals and groups of clients. Develop coordinated multidisciplinary programmes of care/care packages. May work independently or with other SLT colleagues, or as part of a multidisciplinary team. Provide advice, strategies and programmes, as appropriate to the wider workforce, including parents/carers.
  2. To share learning from specialist areas of interest including input when developing, and delivering, Team objectives
  3. Collaborative working with Band 7 Therapists for the ongoing evaluation and development of the service to support children with SLCN in Reception.
  4. To identify and evaluate evidence in the specialist area to contribute to Team Evidence Base
  5. To signpost SLT colleagues, education colleagues and parents to information on SLCN
  6. To collaborate with colleagues in health and education to share current practice and developments relevant to children with SLCN
  7. To access documents and information on current and new resources relating to specialist area(s) and informing the team
  8. Establish and maintain liaison with parents/carers and other professionals, both within own department and with other services/departments for the comprehensive management of clients. Includes attendance and participation at case conferences
  9. In all situations, will communicate complex and sensitive information to clients/parents where there will often be significant barriers to understanding. Communication will include both verbal and non-verbal methods
  10. Demonstrate progression of clear therapeutic aims as appropriate to clinical setting, with the use of established team outcome measures
  11. To collect statistical data and be involved in the use of audit and outcomes to measure and improve quality of care.
  12. Propose, contribute to and develop procedures, policies and standards for service delivery within own specialist area, and advises line manager of resources required
  13. Maintain and provide accurate and timely documentation e.g. patient records and reports, sharing with others as appropriate, observing data protection guidelines
  14. To record contact electronically within 24 hours
  15. Follow best practice SLT standards in accordance with national, regional and professional standards
  16. Meet the required level of continuing professional development as stated by RCSLT and required by the Trust.

  2. Maintain and update knowledge base in specialist area, to expand role and autonomous working
  3. Provide prospective SLT undergraduates and other professionals the opportunity to observe the work of a SLT. To contribute to the supervision of students and may have delegated responsibility for coordinating aspects of student placements
  4. Independently organise and provide specialist training to SLTs, SLT students, Trust and other agency personnel, parents/carers, individually and/or in groups on specific SLT related knowledge and skills.
  5. Identify training needs within team, with regard to own specialism
  6. Attend and provide input at SLT service meetings, multidisciplinary meetings within Health Economy and external multiagency meetings. May deputise for team leader at specified meetings
  7. Observes personal duty of care in relation to equipment and resources in course of work and highlights the need for ordering further equipment as required
  8. Ensure good time keeping and planning, to execute the role effectively
