Job summary

This is a unique opportunity to join the leadership team at Black Country Healthcare Speech and Language Therapy for the adults with Learning Disability service, leading the Wolverhampton SLT team.

As team lead, you will manage the waiting list for the Wolverhampton service, support staff in the team with regular supervisions and appraisals, and work clinically with clients referred around communication and swallowing needs.

You will need to be an organized, professional individual with person-centred values and leadership skills. You will have band 7 peers from each of our Black Country locality areas, inpatients and forensic LD services. The community teams are supported by an MDT Intensive Support Team where there is a fulltime SLT employed. You will receive support from peers, colleagues, operational managers and our Principal SLT for clinical leadership. You will be an integral part of the Wolverhampton MDT with strong links with the other professional groups including Psychiatry, Psychology, OT, Physio and Nursing teams.

Main duties of the job

This post involves leading a small team of therapists and assistants in the delivery of a specialist Learning Disability community service, providing both operational and professional supports. The service aims are to provide specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessment and intervention to adults with learning disabilities presenting with a broad range of swallowing difficulties and/or communication difficulties in a variety of different settings in the Wolverhampton area.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a good knowledge base, excellent communication skills and a flexible, positive attitude and be able to work effectively as part of a Speech and Language Therapy and multidisciplinary team.

We are a forward-thinking, friendly and supportive specialist Speech and Language Therapy service working across the service within the community, enhanced inpatient settings and pathway teams reducing hospital admissions across the Black Country.

Continuing professional development is actively supported via annual appraisals, opportunities to attend webinars/courses, regular clinical supervision opportunities and through networking and skill sharing with SLT colleagues from across the service.

  • Accessing ongoing supervision within a Performance Review framework, the post holder independently assesses, diagnoses and manages the communication and/or swallowing needs of clients, in particular those with the most complex difficulties, including those with challenging behaviour and complex physical health concerns, to maximize appropriate health and social benefits.   • The post-holder provides both direct and indirect intervention, consultation, advice and support; working within a multi-disciplinary model in order to ensure that the inter-agency needs of clients are met.
  • The post-holder undertakes advisory work, second opinions and provides peer review and advice within his/her area of expertise to support and develop the clinical skills of other staff.

  • The post-holder liaises both orally and in writing with any significant others involved in the management of the client, within and outside the NHS, to ensure the clients needs are met effectively and efficiently.
