Starting in September 2024, the BSc (Hons) Nursing Degree Apprenticeship is an exciting opportunity to train to become a Registered Nurse, with Birmingham City University.
Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship (Adult, Child, Mental Health and Learning Disabilities) - BSc (Hons) - 2024/25 Entry | Birmingham City University (bcu.ac.uk)
Specialising in either Mental Health or Learning Disabilities, you will be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week and complete a combination of academic study & practice placements, as well as working as a Healthcare Support Worker at BCHFT. You will be supported during your journey to be your best and will join us upon completion as a Band 5 Registered Nurse.
You must:
- Be a minimum of 18 years old and demonstrate that you are living permanently in the UK
Hold the entry requirements of:
- 120 UCAS Points UCAS Tariff Points - Calculate Your Entry Requirements
- Possess GCSEs at grade C or above / 4 or above - in English and Maths, or equivalent qualifications (e.g. Functional Skills)
Be able to provide evidence of your entry requirements (original certificates) at the time of applying
Main duties of the job
The BSc (Hons) Nursing Degree Apprenticeship is a 48-month work-integrated university degree, designed to enable you to train as an apprentice to become a graduate Registered Nurse (Mental Health or Learning Disabilities) with the NMC upon programme completion.
The programme combines both work-based and academic learning between Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (BCHFT) and a Higher Education Institute (HEI).
As a Registered Nurse Degree Apprentice, you will be predominantly based, as a paid employee, within BCHFT. Your practice placements will be specific to your chosen field throughout the four years. However, to help you become a more rounded nurse, you will also have opportunities to learn across the four fields of nursing. Your placement learning experiences may be within community, hospital or home environment settings, in order to meet the NMC programme requirements. Whilst on placement, you will be supported, supervised and assessed by practice and academic staff to develop your knowledge and skills.
Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to join the Nursing and Midwifery Council register as a Registered Nurse (Mental Health or Learning Disabilities).
Throughout the BSc (Hons) Registered Nursing Degree Apprenticeship, you will be taught the skills and knowledge that will enable you to work in today's dynamic and changing healthcare environment.

- Deliver high quality, compassionate care under the direction of a Registered Nurse (or other nominated registered care professional) with a focus on promoting patient health and independence.
- Successfully complete and pass the academic elements of the programme as specified by BCHFT, the HEI and the Institute of Apprenticeship standards. According to these standards, you will be required to complete 4,600 hours, equally divided between theory and practice, as off the job training. You will also be required to complete an apprentice portfolio that demonstrates learning and skills and complete an end point assessment.
- Successfully complete the nursing competencies according to the NMC Standards (NMC 2018) and as specified by the Trust and the University.
- Have sound attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS Values and Trust values.
- Work as part of a designated clinical care team, under the direction of a Registered Nurse (or other nominated registered care professional), delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the patient.
- Under the supervision of a Practice Assessor (NMC 2018), you will develop your own nursing competence whilst on placements, and will also be required to attend academic study, whilst maintaining evidence of your learning during these times.
- Adhere to the policies and procedures required as an employee of BCHFT, undertake all mandatory training required for the role, attend progress meetings on a 6 monthly basis with BCHFT and provide evidence of course progression upon request.
- Demonstrate a flexible and dynamic attitude, throughout the duration of the programme.
