Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a newly qualified or experienced Occupational Therapist to work in the Older Adult Enhanced Community Mental Health Team (OAECMHT) both in Wolverhampton and Sandwell.

Occupational Therapists within the OAECMHT deliver a variety of one to one and group interventions to older people who have mental health needs including dementia. Interventions include cognitive rehabilitation, sensory integration and a Greenspace Horticultural Project.

The post will be based at Brooklands Health Centre in Wolverhampton for 3 days (22.5 hours Mon-Wed) and at Jack Judge House in Oldbury (8.25 hours over Thursday and Friday).

Main duties of the job

  • To provide Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment interventions as part of a multidisciplinary team for older people with mental health needs including cognitive impairment/ dementia within Older Adult Community Mental Health Services.
  • The post holder will manage a defined caseload, using evidence based/client centred practice to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
  • To work within a multidisciplinary team setting, providing advice to the multidisciplinary team as required.
  • The role will involve allocation of work to Occupational Therapy Assistant Practitioners and ongoing support on a daily basis, as well as supervision and appraisal.

Job responsibilities

  • To manage a clinical caseload of older adults with mental health needs requiring occupational assessment and treatment interventions within community settings.
  • To undertake occupational therapy assessments/treatment interventions with designated service users, utilising investigative and analytical skills to formulate individualised treatment plans.

  • To work collaboratively with service users and their families/carers to identify occupational therapy goals as part of the overall recovery care plan.
  • To utilise standardised and non-standardised occupational therapy assessment tools as part of the assessment process.
  • To actively engage and motivate service users in the occupations of self-care, productivity and leisure.
  • To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment in order to measure progress to ensure effective intervention.

  • To utilise clinical reasoning skills, demonstrating critical thinking, reflection and analysis from which to inform practice.
