Job summary

A golden and rare opportunity has arisen to join a male acute ward (Clent) at Bushey Fields hospital. The role will involve overseeing patient care and safety, driving quality, supporting and providing leadership to junior staff, and to support the ward manager.

Main duties of the job

To manage a very busy and dynamic ward with an established management team.

To work with, promote and contribute to the development of appropriate models of inpatient care.

To contribute to the assessment of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care within the context of the care programme approach.

To provide supervision and clinical leadership to junior nursing staff, to ensure effective delivery of programmes of care for the patients on the caseload.

To report and identify service deficit limitations/development opportunity to senior colleagues.

To monitor the well being of patients and contribute to the development of practice in relation to protecting individuals whose health and well being is at risk.

To ensure effective communication with the multi disciplinary team, service users and carers about programmes of care and routine or complex matters

To manage safeguarding and complex case management on a busy male acute ward.

Will have opportunity to to undertake managerial duties such as rota management, audit improvement.

To deputise in the absence of the ward manager as required.

To carry out the senior nurse role when required across site.

Provide leadership whilstintegrating the trust vision and values in to the working practices of the team.

To work within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

To demonstrate an ability to engage proactively using effective communication with patients and families/carers/significant others.

Ability to demonstrate a high level of clinical nursing expertise acting as a role model to others and to have an awareness of their own specialist skills.

To participate in Mental Health Act assessments and demonstrate an up to date knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the nurse and its application in practice.

To demonstrate a good understanding of Mental Capacity Act and implementing Deprivation of Liberties Safeguarding referrals.

Demonstrates competence, skills and knowledge to effectively work with patients and their families/carers/significant others with regards to medicine management.

Demonstrate the skills and knowledge essential for developing risk management plans and timely review of the risk management plan identifying opportunities for positive risk taking in conjunction with the patient, ward team and carer/family/significant other.

To support Band 5 staff in their role as named nurse, facilitating responsible care coordination, care planning, implementation and clinical assessments.

To monitor the well being of patients and contribute to protecting individuals whose health and well being is at risk in accordance with local policies e.g. observation policy, risk management policy.

Ability to assess patient progress on the ward through close working with the ward team.

To maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with the Data Protection Act and Professional Code of Conduct.

To maintain clinical records in accordance with local policies.

To monitor and maintain health, safety and security of self and others in own work area as identified in local policies.

To initiate quality improvement directives such as clinical audits, Essence of Care.

To take an active and where necessary a leading part in developing knowledge, ideas and to support evidence based practice and have a clear understanding of good practice.

To support Band 5 staff in their role as Shift Coordinator and/or Nurse in Charge.

To undertake and support team members through processes such as Professional Developmentplanning and Clinical Supervision.

To contribute to the development of junior members of staff and students promoting an environment conducive to learning.

Ensure all necessary documentation identified in organizational/local policies and procedures are completed by self and others as required.

Develop nursing practice through the critical appraisal of research, integrating findings where appropriate into clinical practice.

Support nursing and multi disciplinary research and audit within the Trust.
