Job summary

This is a tri-partite role between HEE, employing Trusts and RCS England; this includes responsibility for ensuring that the Clinical and Education Supervisors in the Trusts receive training regarding the Core Surgery Curriculum including the new general professional capabilities, how to support trainees in difficulty locally and through the Professional Support Unit etc.

the initial contact for local training, education and guidance with the support of the Core Training Programme Directors and Head of School. For trainees in higher surgical training, support the relevant Training Programme Director in developing a suitable training environment including interaction with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and the Post Graduate Clinical Tutor (PGCT)

Responsibility for core surgical trainees including non-NHSE, LEDs and SAS doctors including FY and GP trainees in surgery.

Active involvement in medical workforce planning related to surgical trainees within the Trust

Engagement in postgraduate activities

Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills, with an ability to deal with difficult situations. Contribute to effective MDTs with a positive attitude towards multi-professional working.

Main duties of the job

The Surgical Tutor is responsible for ensuring that Clinical & Educational Supervisors receive appropriate training regarding the Core Surgery Curriculum including the new general professional capabilities, how to provide support for trainees in difficulty locally and through the PSU, ISCP and ARCP processes & outcomes.Surgical Tutors should obtain and maintain a list of approved Clinical and Educational Supervisors from their Postgraduate Centres.Local Supervisor training should be arranged by the Surgical Tutors. HEEWM colleagues can attend to support the provision of training on specific topics (for example the Professional Support Unit and ARCP process).Surgical Tutors should contribute to the local delivery of training and education for all surgical trainees.Should arrange regular catch up sessions with all the core surgery trainees.They are the initial contact for local training issues to be resolved with the support of the Core Training Programme Directors and Head of School if required. For trainees in higher surgical training, they should support the relevant Training Programme Director in developing a suitable training environment including interaction with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO)/Director of Medical Education (DME) and Postgraduate Clinical Tutor (PGCT).

Attendance is now mandatory for all Core Surgery trainees regardless of MRCS progressc) Engage with IT and Postgraduate services to ensure appropriate computer facilities for teaching sessions (including but not limited to access to computer with speakers, video cameras, microphones, appropriate software and appropriate web access to relevant sites).d) Support the Core Surgery teaching programmes by facilitating and organising local speakers for teaching days.e) Engage fully with the PGVLE to support the platform in the delivery of teaching/ courses as well as potential additional sessions to professional and personal development6. should have access to ISCP for the Core and Higher Surgery trainees within their Trust.7.   • Applicant must be a surgeon who holds their CCT or is on the Specialist Register and holds a minimum 5 session contract with the Trust
