Job summary

Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint a Clinical Research Fellow in Hepatology on a 12 months fixed-term contract, provisionally commencing from March 2026.

This post is based in the Liver Unit at the BirminghamWomen's & Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust working under the direction of Dr Girish Gupte Consultant Paediatric Hepatologist. It is designed to give the post holder the opportunity to undertake preliminary basic research, clinical research and gain experience as a sub-investigator in the clinical trials taking part in the department, while gaining skills in caring for children with liver disease pre and post-transplant.

This post joins the existing junior medical team of 3 senior trainees (ST4-6), 1 junior trainee (ST2-3) 1 International clinical fellow and 2 Physician associate working in the speciality services of the Liver Unit at Birmingham Women's & Children's Hospital. This post involves 80% research and 20% clinical duties.

Main duties of the job

The applicant will gain/consolidate experience in management of children with all forms of liver disease, the peri-operative care of children receiving liver, and liver and small bowel transplantation, and co-ordination of investigations including liver biopsies and endoscopies. Applicants will have the opportunity to participate in specialised liver clinics (CF, Metabolic, Fatty liver, Viral hepatitis, adolescent transition, joint intestinal failure clinics) and will gain knowledge about diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures and liver biopsies. There are opportunities to gain experience in assessing children for intestinal transplantation, the inpatient management peri transplant and the long term management (including endoscopy and ileoscopy of the graft) and the detection of complications unique to this exceptional cohort of patients. He/She will provide support for the nurse led telephone follow up clinic and receive training in making management plans and giving feedback to the referring hospital.
