Job summary
The Department of Newborn Screening & Biochemical Genetics (NSBG) at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust are seeking applications for an enthusiastic and dedicated Associate Practioner for a full time, permanent position to join our friendly team based at the BCH site.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a unique AP role offering experience of working within a specialist NSBG department consisting of the West Midlands' regional Newborn Bloodspot Screening (NBS) and Inherited Metabolic Disorder (IMD) laboratories. The NBS & IMD sections are amongst the largest in the UK and carry out a range of specialist testing regionally, nationally and internationally.
We are looking for an individual who has significant technical laboratory skills who has experience working in a similar environment such as antenatal, newborn screening or metabolic biochemistry laboratories or other specialist biochemistry or toxicology disciplines.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be expected to perform duties across the department in both the newborn screening & metabolic laboratories.
They will undertake administrative tasks such as specimen receipt & preparation for analysis, data entry onto the LIMS and packaging samples for courier to referral laboratories. Specialist manual techniques including thin layer chromatography, organic extractions, electrophoresis, spectrophotometric analysis, cell culture & microscopic analysis and molecular techniques such as DNA extraction & PCR. Preparing complex reagents for automated and manual analytical methods using various equipment and processes.
In addition to carrying out technical analytical work the post holder will also be expected to actively support other core functions of the laboratory such as quality management and health and safety. As a major teaching hospital we frequently host trainees and students, so training and shadowing is an essential part of this role.
