Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care and KIDS

Job summary

We are seeking to appoint a Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care and KIDS Intensive Care & Decision Support to join Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust. This is a substantive consultant post (10 PAs, 7.5 DCC / 2.5 SPA), with an equal split of clinical and supporting professional activities across PICU and the KIDSNTS regional transport and advice service.

The post-holder will contribute to the delivery of high-quality clinical care, teaching, audit, quality improvement and research, working closely with colleagues in both PICU and KIDS to maintain and advance standards of paediatric critical care.

Main duties of the job

Provide consultant-level care for critically ill children on PICU (31 beds, 1400 admissions per year), covering a broad range of medical and surgical specialities including cardiac, liver, trauma, transplantation and burns.

Lead on clinical decision-making and the safe retrieval and transfer of critically ill neonates and children within the West Midlands and beyond via the KIDSNTS service.

Participate in the shared consultant rota for both PICU and KIDS, with a fixed 50:50 allocation.

Support service development, clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and research.

Contribute to the education, training and supervision of medical trainees, ANPs, nurses, and allied professionals.

Engage in regional critical care network activities, contributing to shared governance and improvement work.

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent qualification
  • FRCA/MRCP/MRCPCH/Equivalent
  • APLS/PALS/equivalent certification
  • Level 3 safeguarding training
  • On GMC Specialist Register for base specialty at the time of application or
  • Within six months obtaining CCT for UK RCPCH trainees, on the date of interview
  • or on the GMC specialist register for PICM at the time of application (if CESR/Portfolio pathway)

Knowledge & Clinical expertise in specialty/sub-specialty

  • Completion of RCPCH Progress PICM Curriculum and two years training in an RCPCH PICM ISAC approved center/rotation pediatric intensive care medicine plus six months (minimum) of anesthetics (stand-alone)
  • OR - Existing Substantive practicing consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine in the NHS, including transport-
