Job summary
Director of Medical Education is strategically responsible for the delivery of excellent undergraduate medical education and training for Postgraduate Doctors in training across the Trust in line with the requirements of the HEE WM postgraduate medical education contract.
The Director of Medical Education should be a senior consultant in the Trust and will have a close working relationship with the Undergraduate and Post Graduate Tutors, Clinical Directors, Director of Education and Chief Medical Officer.
The postholder will be line managed by the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for medical leadership and professional standards.
The postholder will directly manage the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Clinical Tutors; as well as the generic roles that are funded for specific education funded agreement activity e.g. CTFs, SATus, SuppoRTT, SAS, HWB and IMG/LED leads. The post holder will have a close working relationship with the College Tutors and Education Leads across the Trust.
Main duties of the job
The role will need to work strategically with the Director of Education, Clinical Divisions and with other Deputy Chief Medical Officers to support the Trust to develop and maintain the Postgraduate and non-consultant doctors in addition to the allied workforce required to provide medical clinical care across all services provided by BWC.
Education and training are core NHS responsibilities and require robust governance, policies and procedures. The provisions for delivering Medical Education and training within the Trust should encompass Undergraduate Medical Students, Postgraduate Doctors in Training and Non-Consultant career grade Doctors.
The Director of Medical Education (DME) should also be concerned with the appraisal and revalidation processes and continuing professional development of all Doctors. The DME will have a working relationship with the Postgraduate Dean to ensure the training programmes meet the requirements set out in the GMC Quality Management Framework.

To be responsible for the Trust achieving defined standards of postgraduate and undergraduate medical education.
To provide strategic leadership and vision for the Trust on medical education issues.
To work with his/her colleagues to produce, implement and monitor a strategy for the provision of medical education and training.
To align medical training and education with the service objectives as defined by Trust Board.
To represent the Trust on medical education issues, both externally and internally.
To ensure medical and allied workforce planning is cognizant of the medical education training requirements of this workforce
To establish improvement strategies to improve the health and wellbeing of medical staff at all levels
The DME will:
- To deliver a clear and accountable structure for the delivery of post-graduate medical education for HEE trainees across BWC
- To aid in the recruitment of and provide leadership, direction and development to all medical staff involved in postgraduate medical education (HEE)
- To manage data collection and reporting processes necessary for internal quality control and training service development for all sites
- To liaise with other educational leaders towards the development of multi-professional learning as appropriate
- To provide evidence of robust systems for educational governance required by statute for the GMC and HEE WM QA processes, and other external bodies as requested.
- To implement and monitor the effectiveness of a health and wellbeing strategy for postgraduate doctors
- To report to Trust Board as appropriate to ensure awareness of the impact of changes in medical education on BWC.
- To implement, monitor and improve medical training programmes.
- To contribute to the Education Departments annual report and business plan.
- To report to Trust Board as appropriate to ensure awareness of the impact of changes in the medical workforce at BWC.
