Job description

Job responsibilities

To take part in weekly ward meetings that support the clinical model including ward round, CPA meetings, formulation and care planning meetings

To oversee the medical care of inpatients on the ward including assessment, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and physical aspects of children and young peoples presentation

Undertake risk assessment and management

Liaison with families and, where appropriate, with other agencies

Undertake gateway assessments for referrals into the service

Undertake activities to support the management of detained patients

To consult with senior medical colleagues where further help with complex assessments is needed.

To take clinical responsibility for any patient seen by him/ her, and for the advice he/she gives to members of the multi-disciplinary team.

The post holder will contribute to admission planning, reviews and discharge planning with other members of the specialist team.

The post holder will contribute to implementation of clinical guidelines.

The post holder will support the team in participating in reviews e.g. QNIC standards and CQC reviews.

Liaising with other agencies particularly with regard to continuity of patient care. This is particularly important in complex cases when liaison and collaborative working with other services/agencies is necessary.

Assuring the involvement of families and carers wherever possible with the patients consent in treatment planning.

To write letters and communications to GPs and other professionals as required.

To participate in various medical staff meetings within Forward Thinking Birmingham and BWC Mental Health Services as required.

To participate in the SAS doctors on- call rota covering out of hours responsibilities including weekends.

Flexibility to shape and respond to changing service requirements. To attend and participate in the academic programme of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.

To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12 (2) approval, Approved Clinician status and abide by Professional Codes of Conduct.

To participate annually in a job plan review which will include consultation with a relevant Manager in order to ensure that the post is developed, to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernisation.

The post holder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.

To comply with the Trusts agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the Mental Health Services senior management team in preparing plans for services.

To work with administrative staff to record accurately and comprehensively, clinical activity and submit this promptly to the Information Department.

To participate in service and business planning activity for the Business Unit and, as appropriate, for the whole Mental Health Service.

To participate in annual appraisal process.

To attend and participate in the academic programme of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.

Person Specification

Essential

Essential

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• Current full registration with GMC (or eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment)
• GMC licence to practice
• Eligible to work in the UK
• Minimum 3 years post MBBS experience
• Minimum 2 years psychiatry experience
• Evidence of being a strong team member with excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills
• Able to manage duties under the MHA, including assessment of patients in Place of Safety detained under Section 136
• Experience with the treatment of patients with complex mental disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions, emotional trauma and emerging personality disorders
• Management of patients under CPA
• Knowledge & experience of clinical audit
• Ability to supervise and train junior medical staff
• Ability to work within a collaborative multidisciplinary framework
• Excellent communication skills, diplomacy and tact
• Ability to keep good, legible written records
• Must have good skills in communication with patients, relatives/carers, colleagues and staff of other organisations
• Proficient in IT and clinical system
• Ability to work independently, methodically and safely
• Capacity to prioritise workload

Desirable

• MRC Psych (or equivalent)
• Approval (or eligible for approval) under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act
• Experience in child and adolescent psychiatry including tier 4 experience
• Knowledge/experience of clinical governance i.e. conducting investigations into incidents, complaints etc
• Experience and interest in providing training and teaching for a variety of staff groups
• Active participation in Clinical audit
• Published research
• An interest to participate in on-going research projects, especially putting research into practice
