Job summary

We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for an experienced doctor to join our department of Paediatric Hepatology, Hepato-Biliary and Transplant at Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The Paediatric Hepatology Clinical Fellow post is a nine month post available from January 2025 extendable to 12 months depending on performance and workforce requirements of the liver unit.

You will be part of a welcoming and dedicated team consisting of six medical and four surgical consultants, two junior and three senior paediatric post-graduate doctors, a clinical research fellow, and two physician associates.

Applicants should possess MRCPCH Part 2 or equivalent and will be expected to have experience in paediatrics at Specialist registrar level. Experience of paediatric gastroenterology and/or hepatology would be desirable.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be an integral part of the clinical team and will carry out the following clinical duties:

  • Care and management of inpatients with a wide range of acute and chronic liver conditions
  • Management of children with acute liver failure
  • Investigation and management of children with cholestatic liver disease and pre- and post- operative management of children undergoing Kasai procedure
  • Management of children with intestinal failure referred for intestinal transplantation
  • Management of children and young people peri- and post- liver, liver and renal, small bowel, and multi-visceral transplantation
  • Management of post liver and small bowel transplant complications
  • Management of children with portal hypertension, including gaining experience in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
  • Parenteral nutrition (PN) prescribing for inpatients
  • Presentation at transplant, histology, and radiology MDT meetings
  • Review of immunosuppression level monitoring and routine blood results for children post transplantation, working closely with the specialist nursing team
  • Contribute to out-patient management of Hepatology patients. Potential to review patients in specialist clinics such as metabolic, fatty liver, cystic fibrosis associated liver disease, viral hepatitis and transition clinics
  • Option of learning to perform liver biopsies
