Job summary

To be the ACT technician for the Outpatient Dispensary (The Medicines Chest) based at the Women's Hospital participating in the day-to-day provision of a robust pharmacy service to the Trust, following Trust Values.

Main duties of the job

At all times to comply with all policies of the Pharmacy Department and of the Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to ensure the maintenance of professional standards and compliance with legal requirement.

At all times to maintain safe standards of work and a safe and appropriate environment as required by the provisions of the Medicines Act, the Health and Safety at Work Act, COSHH and waste disposal regulations, and any other requirements as may from time to time be placed upon the department.

To carry out tasks appropriate to the post-holders training, experience and expertise as may be required by their line manager or the lead Pharmacist.

To work agreed overtime as necessary including stock checks

To work as part of the 6-day working week and cross site where necessary.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Hold an NVQ level 3 & BTec certificate in pharmacy services that will meet the registration of Pharmacy Technician's criteria or recognised equivalent as defined by the General Pharmaceutical Society (GPhC).

Desirable

  • Recent experience as a line manager for dispensers
  • Recent experience of dispensing prescriptions for paediatrics, maternity and gynae.
  • To be registered with GPhC as an Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician
  • Recent experience of working as a Accredited Pharmacy Checking Technician.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to interpret prescriptions and dispense accurately
  • Ability to communicate with patients and their carers to provide counselling on their medicines
  • The ability to communicate effectively with prescribers and the wider hospital team.
  • Fluent in written and verbal English
  • High degree of numeric accuracy/ ability to accurately calculate doses within a range of complexities
  • Experience of using a pharmacy computer-based stock control and dispensing systems. To include ordering and invoicing.
  • Organised and able to prioritise own workload effectively
  • Good team player
  • Ability to tackle routine tasks accurately
  • Accuracy & precision to demonstrates attention to detail
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures, guidelines, or training competencies.
  • In conjunction with the pharmacist to guide and manage the dispensary team in providing pharmacy services
