Department of Histopathology, Birmingham Childrens Hospital Site

Biomedical Scientist

Band 5 or 6 depending on qualification and experience

37.5 hours per week

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals to join our small friendly team providing a wide range of specialist paediatric diagnostic services.

The successful applicant should be enthusiastic, highly motivated and committed to the provision of a high quality service.

Main duties of the job

The Trust provides a range of regional and supra-regional specialties including renal, liver and small bowel transplantation, retinoblastoma, paediatric oncology and neuro-muscular services.

The department, which is UKAS accredited, carries out a wide range of immunocytochemical investigations as well as enzyme histochemistry and electron microscopy. You will be expected to work in all routine sections of the department and training will be provided if required (there is opportunity for suitably experienced and qualified Biomedical Scientists to undertake the IBMS Specialist Portfolio, necessary for band 6 post).

The department maintains a voluntary out of hours service. Participation in CPD is actively encouraged and opportunity for further education and development exists.

  • BSc Hons in Biomedical Sciences or other honours degree approved by IBMS for registration with HCPC
  • Current Registration with Health & Care Professions Council HCPC
  • Membership of the IBMS

Desirable

  • Completed Specialist portfolio in Histopathology or relevant experience at Band 6 level

Experience

Essential

  • Specialist up to date knowledge of histopathology
  • Up to date Scientific and technical knowledge with practical skills to a specialist level within biomedical sciences and able to produce high quality technical work, analyse problems and attention to detail
  • Broad knowledge of biomedical sciences
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance and audit practices
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Accreditation, HCPC and IBMS professional standards
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Health and Safety standards
  • Experience in a Histology laboratory working in all sections including:
  • Trimming room
