Job summary

Specialised Medicine has a vacancy for a Paediatric Phlebotomist. We require an enthusiastic, motivated individual to join the staff within this busy team. The posts involve day to day participation in delivering a high quality, caring and efficient phlebotomy service for 0-16 year olds.

The successful candidate will be required to work 3 days a week, both alone and as part of the team. They will be expected to liaise with other healthcare professionals throughout the Hospital in a professional manner at all times. Experience of performing Paediatric phlebotomy by venepuncture is essential.

Main duties of the job

As part of a team of phlebotomists, the post holder will assist in the provision of a child focused phlebotomy service, working within our Main Outpatient Department, our Rare Diseases Centre, and across Wards and occasionally in other Departments.

The Phlebotomist is required to collect blood samples by venepuncture and capillary methods from patients, in our outpatients department and on the wards.

There is a requirement for the Phlebotomist to take HIGH RISK venous samples (HIV hepatitis A, B and C) in the normal course of their duty

Ability to perform venepuncture and capillary sampling on children and neonates with minimal supervision/unsupervised.

Identify the analytical requirements from the request form and take appropriate specimens of either venous, capillary blood or heel prick tests.

The phlebotomist identifies themselves to the patient and provides all necessary information regarding the procedure to be undertaken.

Work in partnership with Specialist Play Therapists to deliver services to children with phobic or anxiety problems.

Work closely with other teams within the Trust to maintain a smooth patient pathway.

Identify the analytical requirements from the request form and take appropriate specimens of either venous, capillary blood or heel prick test.

Transfer specimens into appropriate specimen collection containers following the correct order of draw protocol and ensure that the containers are accurately labelled with all necessary details.

Ensure that the specimens are transported to the laboratories in the optimum time. This may require use of the air tube system.

Collaborate with the collection of appropriate blood specimens for approved research and development projects.

Assist colleagues in clinical holding for patients with extra needs such as very anxious or upset patients, children with Autism, or other learning difficulties.

At all times the stringent health and safety protocols of the Trust are adhered to. Blood specimens are taken in a manner that does not cause undue anxiety to the child or carer. Laboratories are provided with timely, high quality blood specimens taken into tubes that are appropriately labelled and of sufficient volume for the tests requested.
