Job summary
The Complications of Excess Weight Service at Birmingham Children's Hospital is part of a pioneering pilot programme commissioned by NHS England to provide comprehensive assessment, treatment and support to children and young people (CYP) who are experiencing weight-related health complications. The CEW Specialist Nurse will be an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), responsible for delivering care to children, young people and their families from across the West Midlands. The specialist nurse will work within a biopsychosocial model to address the complex needs of patients; combining medical interventions with psychosocial support and lifestyle changes.
Main duties of the job
- The specialist nurse will support, and be supported, to provide care for CYP and their families affected by excess weight as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- The specialist nurse will develop their knowledge and understanding of the complex nature and medical requirements in managing excess weight, to enable them to provide specialist nursing skills, knowledge and expertise to support CYP and their families.
- The specialist nurse will contribute to holistic health assessments of CYP including physical, psychological and social factors, collaborating with the MDT to develop individualised care plans and provide a point of contact for families to ensure these are regularly reviewed.
- Alongside the MDT, the specialist nurse will provide support, monitoring, health promotion and education to CYP and their families related to excess weight, to enable them to lead a life where they can develop to their full potential emotionally, physically and psychologically.
- The specialist nurse will act as a resource and support for primary healthcare teams, shared-care centres and multi-disciplinary teams at BCH.
- The specialist nurse will have the opportunity to be part of the ongoing development of the West Midlands CEW service; including audit, service evaluation and quality improvement, to ensure the care received is to the highest standards and evidence-based care is maintained.
