These responsibilities will be carried out under the guidance of the shift co-ordinator:

To complete the first level assessment of the patients needs to gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs of patients undergoing diagnostic tests for suspected cancer as well as those diagnosed with cancer and to develop a positive, realistic andsupportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met. This will include:

Checking patients vital signs, blood results, patient and height and weight.

Counterchecking patients vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.

Educating patients on their treatment protocol such as indications and side effects.

Ensuring necessary medication and follow up appointments are obtained.

To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.

To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long-term goals or plans.

To plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way.

To work and support staff in performing venepuncture, cannulation, accessing PICCs and Portacaths and administration of Intervenous and SACT therapies

To support the Ward Manager in the management of the clinical environment as a clinical leader and role model

To assume personal accountability for nursing care delivered to a patient in accordance with the NMC code of conduct. There is an expectation for post holders:

To assist with any local or Trust initiatives to ensure the continuous improvement of the quality of services and safeguarding of high standards of care.

To help foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive working environment and maintain staff morale.

To take responsibility for the management and development of a team of staff under the supervision of the Ward Manager

Liaise effectively with members of the multi-disciplinary health care team to achieve a coordinated specialist service across all Trust sites.To work as senior nurse resource for patients, families, and staff.

Education/Qualifications

Desirable

• Qualification in oncology or speciality
• Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
• Recognised teaching qualification
• Leadership Training

Education/Qualifications

Essential

• NMC Registration
• Evidence of ongoing professional development
• SACT Competent
• RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment

Experience

Essential

• Experience in managing the deteriorating patient
• Experience in chemotherapy administration
• Experience in intravenous drug administration
• CVAD access, cannulation and venepuncture
• Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job

Desirable

• Experience in Clinical Management
• Evidence of relevant teaching experience
• Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management

• Flexibility to meet the needs of the service (e.g. shift work)
• Able to work on all Trust sites as required and to be flexible to meet the needs of the role
