Job summary

We are seeking a Physician Assistant to join us on a fixed-term basis to provide cover within our established oncology team.The role has been developed to work alongside the medical and nursing teams, managing patients with a range of oncological conditions. The post-holder will build on their skills in clerking, assessing and examining patients gained through their PA training, present cases to more senior members of the team, initiate and interpret investigations, and recommend appropriate management/treatment. There will be a focus on acquiring skills and knowledge in both medical and clinical oncology. The post holder will be expected to liaise with other professionals and specialties as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients.It is expected that the post holder will become involved in the activities of the Department, including coordinating patients on ambulatory pathways, reviewing patients admitted to their ward/s and providing subsequent management of cases in conjunction with the medical team. It would be envisaged that the role would be developed flexibly over time in accordance with the appointee's clinical interests and in line with the needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

The key duties and responsibilities will include:o Assess and examine patients, order appropriate investigations, interpret investigation findings with support of the medical team.o To assess, review daily and discharge patients admitted for elective chemotherapy following discussion with the medical team.o Maintain timely and appropriate documentation.o Instruct and counsel patients and their relatives with regard to mental and physical health issues.o Have, develop and maintain specialist medical knowledge related to Oncology.o Keep up to date with current guidelines and maintain best practice.o Contribute to achieving and maintaining performance within the hospital and department.o Work within the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective team working in the provision of out-patient and in-patient care to patients on a day-to-day basis.

o Support and contribute to timely discharge planning including completing discharge summaries and support optimising bed capacity.o Abide by the Clinical and Corporate Governance policies of the Trust.o Take part in the administration of the department and the involvement in the management of resources.o Fully document all aspects of patient care, and complete all required paperwork.

Essential

  • BA/BS Degree prior to undertaking PA program
  • PG Dip or MSc. in Physician Assistant Studies from a recognised UK training programme
  • Current and valid certification or re-certification by the Physician Associate National Examination
  • Registration with the GMC

Desirable

  • ALS certification

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of conducting clinical audit/quality improvement
  • Experience in medical procedures and terminology
  • To be experienced in the use of electronic data capture systems, Microsoft Word and Excel and electronic patient record systems
