Job summary

Kennaway Ward is an eleven bedded inpatient ward, caring for patients with a cancer diagnosis. Treatments we provide include surgery, chemotherapy, management of symptom caused by the cancer, and end of life care .

We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic individual who is ready to take the next step in their career. If this is, you then this is an exciting time to come and join our inclusive ward team. You will be required to have excellent communication skills and have the ability to work alongside other members of the ward, and hospital team .Professional development is our priority. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to develop their knowledge and clinical skills with support from the team and our ward based clinical practice facilitator.

You will be required to work a mixture of long days, weekends, and nights across the whole week.

Main duties of the job

To carry out in a responsible and efficient way, the nursing care for patients which has been drawn up in conjunction with the co-ordinator of the shift.

To demonstrate the ability to develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the different treatment modalities and work autonomously under supervision of a registered nurse.

As an integral member of the nursing team, work with team members to ensure the maintenance of an efficient, safe, clean and pleasant environment for all patients.

Undertakes a limited range of delegated clinical care duties relevant to the specific clinical area following competency sign off, for example, ECG, urinalysis, catheter removal, MRSA screening swabs, blood glucose monitoring, pregnancy testing, removal of peripheral cannula, observing patients for signs of agitation or distress, providing heightened observation through specialing/ enhanced care, recording of allergies on EPR and other clinical tasks where training/competency sign off deemed appropriate for a Band 3 HCSW that has been ratified through NAHPC.

Demonstrates an understanding of infection control issues including attendance at mandatory training; an understanding of policy and procedure and accept responsibility for their own infection control practice and a willingness to challenge others practice.

Assisting nursing and medical staff where required with various clinical procedures, as delegated appropriately by a registered nurse.

To assist with any local or Trust initiatives to ensure the continuous improvement of the quality of services and safeguarding of high standards of care.

  • Completed Care Certificate
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a healthcare setting.

Desirable

  • NVQ in Health and Social Care Level 2, working towards Level 3

Experience

  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting for a duration long enough to have obtained relevant competencies for a Band 3 position.
  • Experience of working with computers (keyboard skills, data entry)

Desirable

  • Experience of working with oncology patients

  • Clinical skills (e.g. phlebotomy etc.)
