Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Band 7, Ward Manager/Charge Nurse for Wiltshaw ward at the Royal Marsden Hospital NHS Trust. The ward consists in 17 rooms, providing specialist facilities for the care of haemato-oncology and medical patients. The post holder will work alongside with a vast team to support the full development of the nursing staff in caring for patients with haematological malignancies as well as other oncological malignancies.

Collaborative work between the candidate and the Matron for Private Care and other nursing leaders will enable the ward to maintain a safe and quality environment, where vital skills as Systematic Anti-Cancer Treatment administration, Stem Cell administration including new treatments within cellular therapy field are priorities.

The successful candidate will be an haemato-oncology nurse with proven leadership skills and the vision and passion to help develop the service and optimise high quality patient care.

We are looking for a strong clinical leader with good collaborative skills who is enthusiastic about enhancing patient care through service improvement.

Main duties of the job

To create and maintain a safe, therapeutic clinical environment for all

patients and their families who come to Wiltshaw Ward.

To co-ordinate all functions and activities proactively within Wiltshaw, working closely with Matron and other Sisters

To manage resources of clinical area within budgetary limitations e.g. Finance, equipment and staff (including temporary staff)

To provide strong clinical leadership to the nursing and health care support workers that is motivating, supportive and sets clear boundaries resulting in a high quality safe patient care.

Working closely with School of Nursing and Practice Educators team to support a clinical learning environment that enables nursing staff to develop professionally and promotes the use of evidence in practice.

Manage a co-ordinated nursing service in liaison with all members of the multi-disciplinary team maximising high quality patient care.

To maintain clinical credibility through practice and to utilise the findings of nursing research and evidence based care to optimise high quality patient care.

To undertake first level assessment of the needs of the patient and family. Planning, delivering and evaluating their care throughout their stay from admission to discharge/transfer including complex care packages e.g. discharge of a terminally ill patient. To be a clinical expert in the specialties that relate to the ward ( surgical and medical oncology)

To actively manage the patients clinical stay to ensure that the length of in-patient stay is not any longer than necessary. To liaise with the relevant Private Patient (and NHS) Services Admissions Department with regard to length of in-patient stay, proposed treatment timetables and discharge planning.

Be involved in the direct delivery of skilled and specialized nursing care involving complex physical skills, e.g. IV drug administration, administration of cytotoxic drugs and cellular therapy as well as bone marrow transplants, etc
